As the end of 2025 approaches, it is clear this was a memorable year in Mexican soccer. Toluca dominated on the field, but when it came to transfers, Liga MX stole the spotlight with a series of shock moves that reshaped its global image.
Liga MX attracting global attention
Liga MX can now boast that world-famous names such as Sergio Ramos, Keylor Navas and James Rodríguez all played in Mexico this year. Their arrivals signaled more than just marketing buzz. They showed that Mexico is increasingly seen as an appealing destination, with clubs willing to look beyond the traditional South American market and think on a truly global scale.
Sergio Ramos: the ultimate blockbuster
There was no bigger splash than Sergio Ramos. Monterrey took a bold gamble on the legendary Spanish defender, betting on his experience and reputation to anchor their back line. Ramos arrived as a free agent and instantly became one of the most talked-about signings in league history.
The former Real Madrid star spent one season in Liga MX, delivering several memorable performances. While Monterrey did not win any trophies during his stint, Ramos largely delivered on the field. He left Mexico having played 34 matches, scored eight goals, received 10 yellow cards and was sent off once.
James Rodríguez: promise that faded
León signed James Rodríguez with dreams of competing at the Club World Cup. The arrival of the Colombian star shocked fans and analysts alike, though his Liga MX journey ultimately went from promising to disappointing.
Contrary to early doubts, James played regularly for León and initially looked like a difference-maker. At one point, La Fiera even sat atop the Clausura 2025 standings, with Rodríguez contributing creatively in midfield.
Everything unraveled after León failed to participate in the Club World Cup. During the second half of the year, León became one of the league’s weakest teams, and James struggled to make an impact. He left Mexico with 34 appearances, five goals and nine assists.
Aaron Ramsey: a risky bet that did not pay off
Pumas also joined the trend of high-profile signings, bringing in Aaron Ramsey for the Apertura 2025 tournament. Despite his pedigree, the move was widely viewed as risky, and events proved the skeptics right.
The Welsh midfielder’s stay was brief. Midway through the tournament, Pumas terminated his contract following personal circumstances involving the loss of his pet, Halo. Ramsey departed Mexico having played just six matches and scored one goal.
Keylor Navas: a move that made sense
Keylor Navas stands apart from the rest. The Costa Rican goalkeeper left Newell’s Old Boys to sign with Pumas, embracing the chance to play in Mexico. For the Mexico City club, his arrival was exactly what they needed to stabilize a shaky goalkeeping situation.
So far, Navas has delivered consistently strong performances. He has appeared in 18 matches, allowing 25 goals, and remains under contract through June 2026. His place with Pumas for the Clausura 2026 season is already secured, making him one of the most successful foreign signings of the year.
