There were unprecedented scenes in the Champions League on Tuesday night as Paris Saint-Germain's match against Istanbul Basaksehir was suspended after a racist incident early in the first half.
It all started in the 13th minute of the game at the Parc des Princes, when Presnel Kimpembe challenged Fredrik Gulbrandsen, a tackle that provoked protests from the Istanbul Basaksehir bench.
According to L'Equipe, the away coaching staff had already been warned about this.
At that moment, the fourth official Sebastián Coltescu informed the head referee Ovidiu Alin Hategan about the latest comments about the refereeing.
"It was the black guy," Coltescu is believed to have said in Romanian to his fellow official.
Istanbul Basaksehir assistant Pierre Webo recognised the Romanian word for "black", which is "negru". Given that Webo spent time in Spain with Osasuna, Leganes and RCD Mallorca and given that the word sounds like the Spanish word for "black", which is "negro", he understood what was being said.
"Why do you say 'negro'?" was Webo's response.
At that point, various members of the coaching staff and various players enquired as to what was going on.
"You never say 'this white guy'," stated Istanbul Basaksehir forward Demba Ba, who has many times been at the forefront of anti-racism initiatives.
The Turkish team refused to play on and, according to L'Equipe, Webo moved into the dressing room.
PSG stars Neymar and Kylian Mbappe tried to work out what was going on too and they are believed to have explained to the lead referee that the game couldn't continue with the same fourth official. Hategan called for calm and allowed the two teams to walk off the pitch.
It was then that various media outlets reported that UEFA's plan was for Coltescu to move to the VAR room and for one of the officials there to act as the fourth official for the remainder of the game, but Istanbul Basaksehir rejected that.
It was then reported that the game would resume at 22:00 CET and PSG turned up then, but the Turkish side weren't there and they announced via their social media platforms that they weren't going to play. PSG later posted supportive messages on their own social media accounts.
At around 23:00 CET, when the game should have finished, UEFA explained that the match will be resumed on Wednesday at 18:55 CET with Dutch referee Danny Makkelie in charge and with Bartosch Frankowsky from Poland to be the fourth official. UEFA will also investigate the incident.
On the sporting side of things, Manchester United's loss to RB Leipzig means that a PSG win will put them top of the group ahead of the German side, while any other result will see the Parisians qualify in second.

I’m black and this wasn’t racism or wasn’t intended as racism he called him a negru which is black in Romanian and called him the black guy and Demba Ba’s argument was if I was white you won’t have referred me to the white guy bout because I’m black you called me the black guy and it’s similar to if you see 10 guys walking on the street 9 are short and 1 is tall won’t you refer himself the tall guy the red didn’t intend on being racist but he shouldn’t have used those words anyway but it isn’t racist if you look at it from the refs point of view
