Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, and Bees boss Thomas Frank has made it clear what sort of character the star winger is
Manchester United target Bryan Mbeumo will bring some much-needed work rate and discipline if Brentford boss Thomas Frank's comments are anything to go by. The Danish head coach has made it clear in his past praise that Ruben Amorim would be gaining an exemplary professional at Old Trafford.
The French-born forward made the switch to London in 2019, with the Bees signing him for a then-club record fee of £5.8million. Mbeumo hit the ground running, scoring 16 goals in his first campaign as they were thwarted in the Championship play-off final by Fulham.
Redemption would be had 12 months later when Brentford were promoted to the Premier League by way of the play-offs, and the winger came on leaps and bounds in the top flight, going from wing-back to talismanic winger.
With marksman Ivan Toney departing ahead of the 2024/25 season, Mbeumo stepped up to assume a starring role, and his 20 Premier League goals have caused a string of suitors to surround him as the summer window opens.
It has been suggested that the Red Devils are the party who have taken Mbeumo's fancy, and his manager Frank has previously opened up about the impressive work rate and commitment that will be arriving at Old Trafford should a deal be completed.
According to The Athletic, Mbeumo has decided that United are the team he wishes to join this summer, with Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham all interested. Talks are now expected to open between Brentford and the Red Devils, as the 25-year-old looks set to bring his goal-scoring prowess to Manchester should he get his way.
Back in 2023, when Mbeumo was sidelined with an ankle injury, boss Frank shed some light on the winger's standing within his squad, admitting his efforts would be a big miss.
"[Mbeumo] must be number two after Ivan [Toney] in terms of goals and assists, which is key," said Frank. "His work rate for the team is incredible.
"You don't see many wingers who work so hard and mean so much. He's become the key man saying, 'Give me the ball, I'll take this.' Who will that man be now? We'll find out in the next weeks."
Praise for Mbeumo has long been offered up by the Danish manager, who, the year prior, with Brentford still in their Premier League infancy, lauded the forward's brilliance.
"It's brilliant, I must say," admitted Frank, speaking after a Mbeumo hat-trick gave his side a 4-1 FA Cup win away at Port Vale. "He's been brilliant for us this year in the Premier League.
"He came back from a minor injury. We knew that he wanted to play ready for Tuesday. And three quality finishes, very composed. We know that these FA Cup games are very difficult.
"Second half we started bad, they played a tiny bit more direct. They put us a little bit under pressure, but in the end we, and especially Bryan Mbeumo, showed our quality."
