Thomas Muller 'could announce his retirement from international football TODAY'

Thomas Muller has decided to retire from international football following Germany's elimination from Euro 2024, according to a report.

The 34-year-old was part of Julian Nagelsmann's side that thrilled at the tournament before ultimately coming unstuck at the quarter-final stage in their home tournament.

Muller made only two appearances off the bench during the tournament, earning his 130th and 131st cap for the national team.

According to Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg, the Bayern Munich forward has informed Nagelsmann of his decision to retire from international football and he will make a public announcement this weekend.

Muller hinted at his international future after Germany's heartbreaking 2-1 defeat by Spain last week.

'Realistically speaking, it is possible that this was my last international match,' he said. 'I will sit down with the national coach afterwards. We have a very trusting relationship. But as I said, realistically it is quite possible.'

Muller has had an incredible international career with Germany. He was an integral part of the roster that lifted the World Cup in 2014. He scored 45 goals during his time on the international stage.

Only Lothar Matthaus and Miroslav Klose have a better goalscoring record for the Germany national team.

Germany have lost another veteran of the World Cup triumph a decade ago, with Toni Kroos deciding to hang up his boots altogether. There is also speculation surrounding the international future of Manuel Neuer.

The veteran goalkeeper is expected to continue until the 2026 World Cup.
