Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is confident Kai Havertz could spearhead his side's Champions League challenge as their central striker.
Havertz arrived at Stamford Bridge as an attacking midfielder when former manager Frank Lampard signed him from Bayer Leverkusen for £71million, including add-ons, last September.
But Tuchel, who made six changes for Saturday's 0-0 draw at Leeds, played Havertz as his number nine at Elland Road, with Timo Werner and Olivier Giroud on the bench, while Tammy Abraham is still injured.
'It was pretty much the same role that he (Havertz) had against Everton,' said Tuchel, who felt the Blues created enough chances to leave West Yorkshire with all three points.
'I think that Kai feels very comfortable in high positions. I feel he is very comfortable to go to drop in to half-spaces from the high position, to turn and drive with the ball and use his speed.
'But he also arrives very naturally in the box and the six-yard box, to finish our attacks.'
German international Havertz was denied by Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier's smart reaction save early in the second half and failed to convert three other chances.
But Tuchel added: 'He's comfortable in finishing, he's strong in finishing. He can clearly play as a number nine, he can play as a half-striker or as a winger.
'These are his positions and today we used him as a number nine and I'm happy.
'Unfortunately he could not finish like his finishes in training and like his talents allow him to finish because we had enough chances.
'It's a position where he feels comfortable and I trust him in this position.'
Chelsea extended their unbeaten run under Tuchel, who replaced Lampard in January, to 12 matches in all competitions.
Their hard-earned point kept them in fourth place with nine league games remaining.
Leeds avoided a third straight league defeat and although they have failed to score in their last three matches, they too created several clear-cut chances.
Boss Marcelo Bielsa took heart after his side had posed Chelsea plenty of problems and his satisfaction was echoed by defender Pascal Struijk.
'We'll take a point against a very good side like them,' Struijk told the club's official website.
'They've been on a good run, so it's good for us to get a point out of this game.
'We had a couple of chances but unfortunately they didn't go in, but it's good we can create these chances.
'If we can get a point and we are unlucky not to get three points, it shows we can compete with the best.'
Bielsa was forced to use a 13th different partnership of the season at centre-back, with Struijk alongside Diego Llorente as skipper Liam Cooper missed out through illness.
The Argentinian is also waiting to learn the full extent of Patrick Bamford's leg injury after the striker limped out of the action in the first half.

i think you actually the one unveiling yr stupidity do u know the reason why he put havertz as the striker All these Chelsea fans claiming to know better than the manager
From your comment here, I see you're implying that a coach doesn't make mistakes. In that case, no coach was going to lose his job over the past years. Chelsea has 3 natural strikers, but a coach chose to use an attacking midfielder as a striker and you think Chelsea fans have no right to complain because the coach knows it all?? Your kind of thinking and expression have revealed your very high level of stupidity. I believe you're plainly stupid.

Gradually Tuchel is unveiling his stupidity. This guy aim is not to concede. He doesn't care if Chelsea scores or wins, he just doesn't want to concede. Putting Havertz as point striker backs my theory.

I think Chelsea's current manager is a genius when it comes in replacing players, some Chelsea fans are blaming him but his decision to use Havertz has been correct in order to avoid any risk to lose Giroud who shall be used in CL match against a big team like Atletico Madrid.

Please, Mr Tuchel, we know you've tried since you came but this is not the time to do so many experiments. We only have nine EPL matches and every match matters a lot. We need Timo Werner or Giroud in that top nine position. Havertz can arrive in the box as eight but not nine because premier league is different from German Bundesliga. Whether we criticize Werner or not, he has been our best striker this season. Apart from goals there are other side of Werner that helps Chelsea to win games. His assist, runs and penalties have helped us to reach this point. There is no doubt we would have won against Leeds had Werner and Giroud started instead of Ziyech and Pulisic. I followed Tuchel when he was in PSG. He sidelined Edison Cavani and Icadi just to play Mbappe as false nine. In the final against Bayern, they created a lot of chances but there was no top nine to convert it and that was how they lost. Leicester city needed the three points against Sheffield united and decided to use three strikers (Vardy, Iheanacho and Perez). Havertz has a very low goal ratio to lead us at this critical time. Even the goal against Everton was an own goal. I'm not criticizing Tuchel but I think we have come to a stage in the league where every point matters and we don't need too many experiments.

You need to stop putting your job in danger. Havertz and Werner can't fit to Chelsea team. Using them will put your job at risk. Havertz was too sluggish to be a striker while Werner all run pass the ball. Think and learn from other previous coas

Wow all of a sudden Chelsea fans know more than the coach. I always says this, other team fan base will always troll us because 80% of we Chelsea fan base don’t know or understand football and some of us started watching football from 2012 😂. Allow the coach to select his team

but he has two strikers bro play Havertz in his regular no.10 and get the best out of him just saying 🤷
But you also have Cavani as why you sometimes play Rashford as nine? Sometimes you need to sort your house matter first before moving to someone’s home

but Kai is the only player in the world who can reach the same class. i was Kais first game as 9. i'm pretty sure that you haven't saw the game against Leeds. Kai was world-class in my opinion. he was definitely the best Chelsea Striker this season. i saw every full game and Not only the onefootball Ticker like you.
Bro Chelsea fans don’t know what they want and some started watching football yesterday, most of them also don’t watch matches only highlights and listen to what people say. I now understand why other team fan base troll as always because 80% of Chelsea fans don’t know anything about football

Giroud is much too slow. he is good with the head but this is too less for top Team. Kai have everything for the world class player. i think next year he is the best Striker in England
I said for this season Giroud can lead us. He proved his ability in Premier league than Newcomer Harvetz. We believe in talent's Harvetz have but We need goals to qualify for the UCL next season.

seems you are a better coach than tuchel you should have been appointed then as chelsea manager instead of him....you ultimately know nothing about football kid

He knows what he is doing. he just want our strikers to improve and work extra hard. Giraud is good but doesn't necessarily fits in our system. am sure can do better at spurs. Werner is good but has low confidence in himself at the moment and am sure he will be very good next season. let's just support our players that the reason why we lost debruyne, Sarah, and lukaku due to the fan's impatience.

Harvetz can be a good finisher I'm confident. But we have to rely on Giroud right now in terms of his Experience, Header attempts & strength and finishing the chances. Giroud is our current best Striker he can lead us in our mission.

i can't understand you Chelsea Fans. most of you prefer the wrong players. i See hundreds of Werner, pulisic and Abraham Fans but this players haven't Chelsea class. Chelsea will sell them after the season you will see. they can't tell you that this players not good because they want money for them. Tuchel is good Coach he makes exactly the right things.
