Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe believes the club should “go down a more experienced route” when hiring a new head coach.
Ruben Amorim was sacked by United on Monday after a turbulent few weeks, which included a tense post-match news conference after their draw with Leeds United that saw him criticise the club’s hierarchy.
The Portuguese coach won just 24 of his 63 games at the helm (D18 L21), while he also oversaw the Red Devils’ Europa League final defeat to Tottenham last season.
Meanwhile, in the Premier League, Amorim had the worst win ratio (32%), the worst goals conceded per game ratio (1.53) and the lowest clean sheet ratio (15%) of any United boss.
Darren Fletcher will take charge of United's Premier League fixture against Burnley on Wednesday, while they are reportedly seeking a caretaker manager before hiring someone permanently in the summer.
Oliver Glasner and Gareth Southgate have emerged as early frontrunners for the role, while Xavi and former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca have also been linked with the job at Old Trafford.
Sharpe, who made 116 of his 175 Premier League appearances for United, believes United must take a different approach to hiring a new head coach after the dismissals of Amorim and Erik ten Hag.
“I would say yes, but they've had that before in the last 10 years,” Sharpe told Stats Perform.
“You know, we've had Jose Mourinho, Van Gaal. We've had experienced managers come in and they've not done the job either way.
“That's because they weren't given time. Maybe they were clashing with the board again and didn't get the resources and players they wanted.
“It seems to be a bit of a running theme at Old Trafford these days. So it really, really depends.
“I mean, I think a younger manager sometimes with a younger squad can work pretty well. If you have a team full of internationally experienced players, sometimes you need a bigger, wiser, more experienced manager to manage those people, players.
“So I would say after going with Ten Hag and we're going with Amorim, who was sort of more potential and more young hot prospects, I think maybe it could be the time to go down a more experienced route.”

Manchester United should hire Enzo maresca, he comes from Guardiola school he is a great coach, he will change United and the team will contenders next season.
If you dont know..Maresca was sacked the same reason as Amorim..they both want to be in control of players movement..they both want to be the manager and not just a coach...

United should be a getting an experienced premier league coach who has the potential of turning the current team into a title winning side. There are few of such coaches at the moment and the names goes thus; 1. UNAI Emery - proven and a winner. 2. Jurgen Klopp - proven and a winner. 3. Maresca - proven and a winner 4. De Zerbi - proven but not won anything 5. Glasner - proven but too risky 6. Southgate - not proven, not won anything 7. Carrick - not proven, too inexperienced 8. McKenna - not proven, not won anything PL 9. Mourinho - proven, too volatile 10. Simone - not proven, a winner
I would go for De Zerbi..by the way the same reason Amorim was sacked like Maresca...

our main problem is not about the coaches.not at All. our main problem is our useless board 💔🤔. they don't want to backup the coach and they don't want to listen to the coach. by my own opinion I think is better to sack all old man united board, they are useless.

Even if they bring the experienced Coach, when The so called Legends of MANUTD are still having influence, when the hierarchy cannot listen to the coach's proposal We shall continue to suffer. Amorim good luck. But MANUTD we are still suffering.RATCliff said it himself that I have given him time to reform the team, then all of a sudden he sacks him. Hippocrates of highest order in hiracy.

United problem isn't the coach but the board. The club will continue to perform poorly until the board concedes power to the manager, supports him in the transfer market, and gives him enough time to thinker his playing styles

Who ever Utd, get will he be a yes man? The new manager has to be "the" boss not a front man. Be able to nurse P/league prima-donnas, be flexible, able to man manage, and have the personality to cope with the constant media that he "will" recieve being at United. 7' previous managers after Fergurson millions spent by all and very very little glory. He has a mammoth task ahead.
