It's advantage Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final after Harry Kane's VAR-assisted penalty gave them a first-leg advantage to take to Stamford Bridge in a fortnight.
Match Events
21' CHANCE! Hazard's shot saved
SHOT! A dangerous moment for Chelsea, as Hudson-Odoi picks out Hazard in the pocket. The Belgium forward, playing through the middle today, gets in a shot from 22 yards which turns out be a straightforward one for Gazzaniga to keep out.
26'Penalty Goal! Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea (Kane)
The referee awards the penalty! Kane is deemed to be just about onside and Kepa, who wiped the Tottenham striker clean out in the box, is cautioned.
GOOOAAALLLLL!! TOTTENHAM 1-0 CHELSEA! It may have taken a couple of minutes for the penalty to be awarded - and it must be said that the correct call was made - but Kane keeps his composure. The pen is not quite in the bottom-left corner, but it has enough power to beat Kepa.
45' OFF THE BAR! Hudson-Odoi almost scores
OFF THE BAR! An incredible end to the first half. Hudson-Odoi swings in a cross from the right which takes a huge deflection off Rose, almost catching out Gazzaniga. The Spurs keeper scampers back and gets a hand to the ball to help it onto the crossbar.
58' HUGE CHANCE! Christensen's shot wide out
HUGE CHANCE! Chelsea really should be on level terms at Wembley. Barkley flicks on the corner and Christensen is there to meet the ball towards the back post, only to shank his first-time effort wide of the target. Shocking miss!
Match Reports
Tottenham are 1-0 up at the halfway stage of the EFL Cup semi-final against Chelsea thanks to Harry Kane's first-half penalty at Wembley.
Spurs surged to a thrilling 3-1 win in the most recent Premier League meeting between the sides but Wembley played host to a more cagey contest on this occasion.
Kepa Arrizabalaga's ill-advised challenge on Kane allowed Tottenham to claim their slender advantage ahead of the return clash, as the England captain converted from 12 yards with typical aplomb.

I can't believe I'm saying this but we were missing Morata today. He may have made the difference. What we lack is a striker since Hazard isn't string enough to be a false 9. Other than that, overall the defence did an ok job of keeping spurs out but attacking wise we are so slow on the ball. We need faster players with quick decision making like the Spurs players. Chelsea coaches need to teach the players how to think 2 or 3 moves ahead of what they'll do next. Only 7/11 players really get a pass for me. Kepa, Rudiger, Azpi, Christensen, Kante, Jorginho and Odoi (was decent but he's young and got time to be the best) and the subs also get a pass as they weren't that bad. The rest were dreadful; Hazard showed up with 10 minutes to go but wasn't great overall. Seems to have lost interest in the club and rightly so with what's around him. Barkley is garbage, like he offers literally nothing to the midfield. He's this season's Bakayoko, more of a liability than a means to win. Kova activated the team when he came on. Alonso had 2 or 3 good left foot crosses but was absolutely ass as a left back. Willian was just Willian. Few dribbles and no end product, pretty much useless unless it's an 11 v 11 dribbling contest. Overall was absolute pants. I'd rather have tried Ampadu over Barkley and played Emerson for Alonso.... crap game overall despite such a tight goal. Outplayed by Spuds again due to the lack of quality up front.... just shows how much of a difference having Costa up front made....

Good game from the lads, the only problem was willian, barkley, and alonso.. They are just busy doing nothing, I don't really see what jorginho is doing that is different from what Mikel did for Chelsea, jorginho plays only short and safe passes and there is no technique or flare in his game.. I couldn't believe we could play this good and be in control for 90 minutes.. I couldn't also believe that spurs will park the bus against Chelsea.. In my opinion VAR is just another way to make headlines in football and to cause controversy because there is not enough contact for this to be a penalty.. Kane was just going through his diving lesson and both VAR and referee fell for it.. See you in Stamford Bridge spurs 😎

we can blame the players so much but the coach is old styled one never study a game better enough. EPL is not a try and error league this chain smoker should know at Chelsea coaches doesn't take such mess without sack option and he will be the waist performer of all. How can these stupid called board members priorites pulisic instead of finding replacement to these dolls called third grade strikers. All the Willian and the like are better player, first we need replacement to these two venomless strikers and real replacement to cesc fabregas not these chicken jo. why buying and loan on spot does it means the team is good already this time? This is a waist of resource just take that money and buy icardi and bring him as soon as this January transfer window, poor management.

chelsea played well . It is very difficult to beat spurs in their home . But we created most chances. we defend well . we have great chance at 2nd leg . In todays match alonso and Barkley was week link . Alonso is too lazy and barkley is just too careless . jorginho cannot produce any key passes he just back pass or pass to nearest player . we need player like fabrecas and striker like costa to win anything

sack sarri before is too before is too late. Sarri doesn't anything to offer Chelsea, falsing Hazard as 9 can't help the club, William lost form yet you are still using him as if no other player that can play the wing. I will rather sell jorginho instead of Fabregas. Alonso, William, jorginho and Sarri are Chelsea problem. hazard plays well whenever he plays from wing.

most of the people criticizing Chelsea today I think didn't watch the match because Chelsea actually had more chances than Tottenham whose keeper had a very good match. plus I think Alonso brings nothing into this team anymore, only slows the team down and Barkley doesn't do anything special on the ball, not even a good forward pass considering he plays a little higher up the pitch
