Sergio Aguero missing from the spot proved costly to Manchester City, who lost 1-0 at Tottenham in the Champions League.
Match Events
2' CHANCE! David Silva's shot wide out
City work the ball down the left flank as Sterling releases the run of Silva into the box, but the Spaniard is caught offside as he fires wide of the target.
8' CHANCE! Alli's shot over the bar
Tottenham have the first opening of the game. Alli wins the ball in the middle of the park before releasing the run of Sissoko.
The Frenchman clips the ball into the box for the run of Alli, who lines up a volley at goal, only to send his effort over the bar.
13' Penalty Missed! (Aguero)
The referee overturns his initial decision and points to the penalty spot. City have a chance to take the lead from 12 yards.
The keeper dives to his left to palm away Aguero's tame effort from 12 yards.
48' CLOSE! Son's shot wide out
Son collects on the right flank before cutting inside to bend an effort at goal on his left foot. His effort threatens the right-bottom corner of Ederson's goal, but it just drifts wide of the post.
56' INJURY! Kane replaced by Lucas
Kane collides with Delph on the sideline and he makes his way off the pitch. He limps down the tunnel. It would be a huge blow for Spurs to lose their key man.
78' GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Man City (Son)
Spurs take the lead against the run of play as Son drills a low strike through Ederson. Eriksen releases Son down the right inside channel, but the winger initially takes a poor touch. The ball almost travels out of play, but he keeps it alive.
The City defence stop and are convinced that the ball has gone out. Son continues and gets a step on Delph before striking his effort with his left foot underneath Ederson into the net.

As a neutral, what a tight game, Son gave everything for the goal, stopping the ball at the line, worried about Kane and it seems like a serious injury, he had no time and walked out as he clashed with Delph, unintentional at full speed, Delph passes the ball to Ederson, and my biggest issue was.. Guardiola, why would you bring KDB and Sane at the 88th minute when mahrez was never doing anything but making defensive runs. He should've taken out Silva for KDB and Sane for Mahrez at half time, not before the game was over, this is not what you expect from an amazing manager as Guardiola, but either way We have a great match coming next week, Guardiola will put everything on the field to come back, and Kane seems like he's out for the rest of the season.

You can't ignore impact of sissolko. I really don't rate him high because he is terrible in front of goal but display he put on today was exceptional. He didn't allow City to hold the ball for a long period and create danger.

I thought Guardiola was dreaming of the Quadruple, yet he was more afraid of losing the Premier League than this very Match. I expected him to Bring in Sane and De Bruyne earlier especially when Harry Kane was already out injured. I am a little disappointed that Guardiola could be this Conservative about his approach to win the Quadruple. He won't even win the League, now he has bottled up the chance of winning the Champions League too.

Sonny boy scored against the run of play, but City played pretty well overall. Just lacked that finishing touch. Lloris was awesome today, but for Manchester Aguero, Sterling and though he got a few good crosses in, Mahrez, were toothless.

What a great match that was. We have two more same fixtures coming soon. Tottenham really played well. Spurs have a got an amazing new stadium and the fans made this game a lot better. Lloris saved Aguero's penalty. Now Lloris have faced three penalties in 2019 and saved all the three. Fernandinho deserved a red card but VAR didn't checked that, City was lucky that time. What a result for Tottenham. Sons goal was great. Only bad thing was Kane's injury. I hope he will recover soon. Looking forward to the second leg. What a match that is going to be. Its in Etihad. When Bernardo Silva, De Bruyne and Sane is staring the game will be changing. Amazing second leg coming. Congratulations Tottenham

Summary of the game ; Manchester City dominated possessions while Tottenham dominated the attacks. Spurs attacks destroyed Pep's tactics

WIN WIN WIN TOTTENHAM!!! That was a really Pathetic move from Fernandinho on Kane. Ref should have given him Red. It was 100% intentional and such thing shouldn't be tolerated in football. Today games was tit for tat.. The second most dangerous Korean in Earth scored a brilliant goal. What a season Sonyy is having... Second leg will be very exciting now.

Worse match ever poor management from Pep Gundogan and Fernandino seriously Mahrez over Sane City was destined to lose from the start I'm surprised we haven't lost by a bigger margin

I do feel like a one goal lead will not be enough for spurs to go through cause they will get a hard time at the Eithihad

Four Reasons why Manchester City loose tonight : 1. Starting with Maharez while benching Sane.🤔😣 2. Not replacing Maharez during half time with Sane. While Sane came it was too late.🙄😑 3. Pep Guradiola was tooo much confident about wining this match and City paid the price.🤑🤑 4. You cannot afford missing penalty at this level of football.😝😢 Spurs deserved the win 200%
Congratulations Spurs for wining the match playing at their brand new stadium.

I know most won't believe me, but I knew, that Manchester City were going to loose today, playing in Premier League is different, but the pressure of the Big stage of the Champions League is different, it's not only about ability, but luck, traditions, self belief. Not even one Manchester City player has won Champions league before, not saying Tottenham players have, but the desire of Tottenham, that energy of the supporters pushing them on in their new stadium did the job for them.

For all my city fans complaining about pep's selection... let me enlighten u guys for a sec...City's next three matches are Palace- 14th, Spurs- 17th, Spurs-20th..Pep's decision to save some of his players was a genius tactical decision because a loss away is better than a loss home... had aguero converted that penalty and the score ended at 1-1 it would have been an amazing achievement going into the 2nd leg but at 1-0.. all hope is not lost... this stretch of games can make or break a quadruple season so let's give pep the benefit of the doubt and applaud his vision until/ if the time comes for us to question it...City Strong💪😎

I think Spurs plays better without Kane. when he was injured they were getting results and as soon as he comes back into the team they go into a winless streak. Looking at their first game in their new stadium you could see Kane wasn't going to score because the team is trying to force the ball to him so that he can score. And I think that is their problem. They need break that barrier of depending or feeling obligated to always get ball to Kane when they're in goal scoring situations. (I'm not denying that Kane is one of the best in the world) but they have players who capable of doing the same i.e Son. Do losing him could be a bittersweet moment; you're losing your best player but you likely to get results that you're looking for...

Sterling 7.5/10 / biggest threat going forward, another great game, little creativity, had to do most things on his own Aguero 3/10 / missed penalty, no impact through entire game other than a decent chip to sterling in the box Mahrez 5/10 / like aguero no real impact Gundogan 6.5/10 / had some good moments, no real mistakes Fernandinho 7/10 / stopped some dangerous counter attacks from Tottenham, overall a decent game for him Silva 6/10 (considering his standards) could have created much more, missed a good chance early in the game (which might’ve gotten ruled out for offside) Delph 2/10 / always the weak link in defense. most goals conceded when he plays come from his flank. Laporte 8/10 / one bright spot for us, our rock in the back Otamendi 6.5/10 / had a decent game Walker 7/10 / no big mistakes, decent defending but no real threat going forward Ederson 8/10 / was brilliant today other than one mistake
