Tottenham have failed in a fresh move to persuade Brendan Rodgers to become the club’s next manager.
Julian Nagelsmann and Rodgers were Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s preferred two candidates to replace Jose Mourinho, who was sacked last week.
But German coach Nagelsmann was confirmed as Bayern Munich’s next manager on Tuesday morning ruling him out the running.
Rodgers is known to have reservations about becoming Tottenham’s next boss something Levy is said to be aware of.
But Sportsmail understands that new overtures have been made over the past 48 hours with regards to gauging whether Rodgers would be interested in taking the job.
However, it is understood the Northern Irishman’s stance has not changed. Rodgers is on the brink of guiding his team back into the Champions League and wants the opportunity to pit the team he has built against the best in Europe next season.
The former Liverpool boss also has a firm grip in Leicester’s football operation, not something he will necessarily have at Tottenham.
And it now seems clear that Levy will have to look elsewhere for Mourinho’s replacement.
We reported on Monday how Levy will not allow his search for a new manager to drag long into the summer, with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag emerging as candidate.
Levy is eager to avoid a long drawn out scenario that will impinge on the new manager’s preparation time for next season.
This summer’s European Championships will cause significant disruption for clubs ahead of next season, an issue Levy is acutely aware of.
Indeed, the Spurs chief wants to give Mourinho’s successor as much time as possible to implement his plans ahead of next and sources claim he will move decisively to ensure there is clarity to the situation as early as possible.
Levy wants to appoint a manager with a clear attacking direction amid concerns from within the club about Mourinho’s more pragmatic approach during his reign.
Sportsmail understands Ten Hag is among the candidates Levy is now considering to replace Mourinho following the news about Nagelsmann and Rodgers.
The Ajax boss’ current deal expires at the end of next season, meaning he is likely to be relatively cheap to release from his existing contract which will suit Tottenham who are working within a tight financial framework due to the impact of Covid.
Ten Hag’s side will win the Dutch title this season, Ajax’s second under the 51-year-old, and he could be tempted by a fresh challenge.
Sources claim Roberto Martinez would be interested in the vacancy at Tottenham after the European Championships with Belgium, while England boss Gareth Southgate’s work with the national team has not gone unnoticed at Tottenham.
Ralph Rangnick is also on the club’s radar.
Ryan Mason is currently in interim charge but is not expected to be in the running for the job on a permanent basis.
However, if the 29-year-old manages to steer Tottenham back into the Champions League with a top-four finish then there could be a groundswell of support for Mason to be given the reins full time.
