Van Gaal raises laughs as he pats HIMSELF on the back for leaving Depay benched

Louis van Gaal has raised laughter with more funny press conference antics.

The eccentric Holland manager saw his side beat Wales 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time Wout Weghorst winner.

And after the game, former Manchester United manager van Gaal discussed the decision to leave Memphis Depay on the bench and leave Burnley striker Weghorst on - before literally patting himself on the back to widespread laughter.

He said: 'I don't know if Memphis has had more warm-ups than other players. I don't think so. It's the structure in our selection to warm up and then sit down, warm up and sit down, so that we can change instantly, like the change Guus Til for Noa Lang.

'Sometimes, of course, in a moment I tell the man warming up 'OK, Memphis now', because maybe I will change him.

'Weghorst had (a) blood (injury) and he had to go off. I thought he was injured, but he was not injured. Memphis was with me and I said to him "No no, if he is fit, I don't change".

Van Gaal then, after saying: 'You know who scored the winning goal. Weghorst! Yes! And I think...', before patting himself on the back.

The 70-year-old, who named an experimental line-up in the Nations League clash at the Cardiff City stadium, saw his side concede a 50th-minute goal by Teun Koopmeiners.

Rhys Norrington-Davies thought he snatched a late draw with a 92nd minute equaliser, but 6'6" target man Weghorst had the final say two minutes later.
