Voltermade: World cup was a great learning experience; I prefer playing as one of two strikers

Florian Wirtz recently spoke in an interview about the change of coach for the German national team and his experience of missing a penalty in the World Cup.

Wirtz said that he is one of many young players in the German team, and the team suffered another major setback in the World Cup, but this experience "was also a great learning opportunity." He said: "Now we will have a new coach, and we'll see what happens next. That's always the beautiful thing, that the games will continue in a few months."

Wirtz's future at Newcastle United does not look clear. In a relaxed chat with Müller, he revealed that his favorite position is one of the two strikers, or closer to behind the striker. "I'm not the kind of striker who can give you a lot of deep runs, or who sticks rigidly to a pure center-forward position. For me, it's more comfortable to have more freedom and to have someone to play with."

When Germany was eliminated in the round of 16 against Paraguay, he stepped up to the penalty spot alone and, like Havertz and Jonathan Tah, missed the penalty. He admitted: "It didn't feel good." He recalled that his thoughts were jumbled at the time: "I was thinking, which way did I shoot the last few times, which way would the goalkeeper guess I'd shoot, and which way would I shoot myself. Then I decided to trust my habit from recent penalties, which was that I never shot to the right. Then I thought, if I shoot to the right this time, wouldn't I be very clever..."
