Wales 2-1 Norway: 10-man visitors suffer comeback despite Bobb early goal

Wales got their Nations League campaign up and running at the third attempt, with Neco Williams' free-kick proving decisive as they fought back to beat 10-man Norway 2-1.

Match Report

Craig Bellamy's side were rooted to the bottom of Group A4 after defeats to Portugal and Denmark, and though Oscar Bobb gave them a mountain to climb in Cardiff on Thursday, Torbjorn Heggem's red card in the first minute of the second half gave them the impetus to fight back.

Norway received a boost ahead of kick-off as Arsenal playmaker Martin Odegaard was passed fit to start after falling victim to a rough challenge from Bernardo Silva against Portugal on Sunday, and it did not take long for him to get involved.

Eleven minutes in, Bobb played a quick give-and-go with Odegaard near the right corner of the box, then wriggled beyond Ben Davies and finished past Danny Ward.

Norway lost Julian Ryerson to injury soon afterwards, and Wales' Sorba Thomas got some joy against his replacement Marcus Pedersen, though only a lucky bounce off Ben Cabango – which took the ball into Ward's arms – denied Norway a second goal in the 36th minute.

And Wales made the most of that reprieve two minutes later, with the ever-dangerous Thomas sliding a great ball into the six-yard box to hand Dan James an easy finish.

A dream start to the second half then put Wales in complete control. Just 21 seconds after kick-off, James darted in front of the hesitant Heggem and was pushed to the ground, with the Norway centre-back sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

And from the resulting free-kick, Williams whipped an inch-perfect effort beyond Orjan Nyland's reach and into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

Only a good save from Nyland prevented Lewis Koumas from stretching Wales' lead, though the uncharacteristically quiet Erling Haaland then failed to direct a header on target at the other end.

Cabango was arguably fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty for handball and Jorgen Strand Larsen went close from distance as Norway pushed hard for an equaliser late on, but they could not avoid a second straight Nations League defeat.

Williams and James give Bellamy statement result

Wales went into Thursday's game off the back of three straight defeats – the last two of them to nil – and already looking bound for relegation back to League B.

They had failed to win their first six matches of 2026, across all competitions (D3 L3), but a memorable fightback against the surprise package from this summer's World Cup should do wonders for their confidence.

Williams' goal was Wales' first from a direct free-kick since Harry Wilson netted against North Macedonia in a 7-1 World Cup qualifying win last November. It was only Wales' second such goal in the Nations League, with Wilson previously scoring directly from a free-kick in a 1-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in October 2018.

Although Williams stole the headlines with his set-piece strike, James' role in Thursday's turnaround cannot be overstated, having scored Wales' equaliser, forced Heggem's red card and, in the process, forced the free-kick from which the hosts went ahead.

Ten of James' 11 goals for Wales have now been scored at the Cardiff City Stadium, including each of his last six.

And defensively, Wales restricted Haaland to two shots (one on target) and 0.35 expected goals. As a team, they finished with a lower xG tally than Stale Solbakken's visitors, 1.05 to 1.3, but Bellamy will not care after masterminding his first win over a side ranked above Wales in the FIFA World Rankings.
