Ollie Watkins feels Aston Villa are in a good place after concluding their pre-season schedule with a triumph at Villarreal.
The striker was on target in the first half to help his side to a 2-0 success, with Emi Buendía also on the scoresheet.
Watkins was pleased with how the pre-season has transpired for the team, following an eight-game schedule that included clashes against some big names in European football.
“It was a really good game,” he reflected pitchside in Spain.
“Obviously different conditions for us out here, really hot but enjoyable.
“I really enjoyed the game and it’s been a good pre-season for us. Over in Nashville, against Roma and Marseille there have been some good tests for us.
“The last game here tonight has been positive, so that stands us in good stead for the weekend.”
Watkins has been in fine form in pre-season, scoring five times, and it’s in stark contrast to last summer when he was dealing with an injury following his exploits for England at Euro 2024.
He said: “Pre-season is crucial for yourself as a player. It sets the foundations for you going into the season.
“Last season I didn’t have that. I didn’t play in any pre-season games so I was trying to play catch-up.
“For me, it’s massive to play these games, feel good, get your confidence up and go into the season all guns blazing.”
The focus now shifts to the start of the Premier League campaign on Saturday, when Villa host Newcastle United.
Watkins is eager to get off to a winning start in B6 as the team look to build on three strong seasons under Unai Emery.
“I’m just looking forward to being back at Villa Park as we haven’t played any pre-season games there," he said.
“It’ll be nice to be playing in front of a full Villa Park again - I’ve missed that feeling.
“We’ve got big targets for the season and it starts against Newcastle on Saturday.”

Aston Villa is a decent squad. A nice club under the astute guidance of the able Unai Emery. Very competitive despite the fact that they have sold a number of star players over the years. We still look forward to yet another good season for the Villains. I'm Manchester City through and through.
