Manchester United can break into the Premier League top four on Saturday afternoon with a win against Wolves.
Goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Fred secured a controlled 3-0 win for United over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night, closing the gap between Erik ten Hag's side and fourth-place Tottenham to just one point. Victory against Wolves on New Year's Eve will send United into fourth place, but a draw will leave them in fifth on goal difference.
A 95th-minute winner saw Wolves win their first game under the management of Julen Lopetegui, giving the west Midlands side a big boost heading into their clash with United. Since Wolves' promotion back to the Premier League in 2018, United have won just three of their eight meetings in the league.
Jadon Sancho and Axel Tuanzebe are both confirmed absentees, whilst Victor Lindelof and Scott McTominay both missed the clash with Forest through illness. Defensive duo Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are set to return though after being rested after the World Cup.
So, could United make it three Premier League wins on the bounce against Wolves on Saturday? We simulated the game to find out.
To complete this simulation, we used FIFA 23 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.
It was a poor start from United as Wolves controlled the opening stages, and the hosts entered the break with a 1-0 lead after Diego Costa prodded Adama Traore's low cross past David De Gea at his near post. Ten Hag needed a much better second-half performance from his side, and he got that when Rashford levelled the score just six minutes after the restart.
Bruno Fernandes played a through ball for Martial to chase, with the striker going one-on-one with Jose Sa. As the 'keeper rushed off his line, he made a fantastic save to deny Martial, but the rebound fell into some space on the left, and Rashford was first to react, firing into an empty net from close range.
The pressure continued from United, with plenty of chances starting to fall their way. Ten Hag's side seemed to find their rhythm in the second half, and just four minutes after Rashford's equaliser, United took the lead.
Antony approached the box on the right, and a one-two with Fernandes sent the winger into the area and down the byline. The Brazilian fired a cross across goal, and Christian Eriksen met the ball with a fantastic volley into the far corner of the net.
It was a precise finish from the midfielder who was completely unmarked after making a late run into the box. As the game went on, Wolves found themselves getting more desperate for the equaliser, and as they threw bodies forward, Rashford capitalised as he notched United's third.
The in-form winger stayed forward as Wolves attacked the United box, and as Luke Shaw regained possession, the defender launched a ball forward for Rashford to chase. The Englishman got the ball under control as he pushed through on goal, and he rifled his effort into the top corner with his left foot to put two goals between the two sides.
Like the win against Forest, Fred came off the bench and guaranteed the three points with a late goal. This time the Brazilian scored in the 92nd minute as he rounded the 'keeper and tapped home to make it 4-1 following a rapid counterattack from United.
Here are the full-time match stats.
FIFA 23 predicts that United could produce another fine attacking display against Wolves, with Marcus Rashford tipped to shine again, scoring twice and assisting once in the simulation.
