Arsenal are still waiting on their England international to commit to fresh terms, but that is not why he has been handed the armband at times
Arsenal midfielder Arsene Wenger insists his decision to hand Jack Wilshere the captain’s armband at times this season is not a ploy to lure the midfielder into signing a new contract.
The England international continues to run down his current deal at Emirates Stadium and is due to drop into the free agent pool at the end of the season.
Fresh terms have been mooted for some time, with Wenger expressing a desire to get an agreement over the line, but little movement has been made in talks.
Wilshere’s position in those discussions has been strengthened by a return to prominence this season, with an academy graduate rewarded with a position as skipper in certain fixtures.
Wenger says that call is based purely on the 26-year-old’s standing in north London, telling beIN SPORTS when asked if he was hoping to influence extension talks: “No, not at all.
“He was born at the club basically. He has a long history with the club, strong link with the club.
“Jack Wilshere on the pitch is a big quality.
“Apart from his technical top qualities he has personality and is in the right place on the pitch, and now with the maturity to organise around him. That's why I played him central.
“I just thought the combination of history, the fact that he's a long-term player for the club, the fact that he has experience and knowledge now, I trust now to make him captain.”
Wilshere has made 31 appearances across all competitions this season – his best return since 2013-14.
He is currently back on the treatment table, having seen an untimely knee problem prevent him from representing England against Netherlands and Italy, but is very much in contention for a World Cup spot and still has the Europa League to aim at with Arsenal.

He is one of the best players, but most of the time, he is in injury. Good for him, if he signs for Arsenal. If not, don't beg him, let him go!!

it's still even unfair for Jack Wilshire to accept deduction of his salary though he should commit his self with the blues

Wenger wants jack out because he’s the only one who will stand up to wenger . That's why not sign him a contact ffs

He's too injury prone and highly overated. Hopefully Southgate won't be mad enough to take him to the World Cup.

Don't see anything wrong with Wenger. He's basically judging players' contract by merit. Wilshere was neither fit nor in form. But he is now, so good on him.

At least he plays and doesn't spend entire seasons unavailable. He's just about 22 also and is only going to improve. Give the lad some space!!!

Wilshere literally contributed nothing to Arsenal for 4 years. Take away all the sentimentality, and this is completely fair. Regarding his new contract, he’s only proven to remain fit this season. I think what Arsenal have offered is reasonable in the circumstance.

Hope they can offer him £120,000 a week.

Compare Ramsey's stats with ineista or modric and you still get his stats better. When it comes to players like wilshere stats don't matter cause scoring or assist is not his game he is CM not CAM. First learn football.

I wouldn’t blame him if he left, I mean for him to be fighting for his place with Ramsey? Xhaka? Elneny? It’s a no brainer lol

Wenger and the staff must go.. delusional people? They keep iwobi ? Welbeck? Xhaka? Take your pick from that team.
