When was the last time Manchester United won five straight games?

Manchester United’s fall from grace has been well documented. It has been nearly 13 years since the Red Devils last got their hands on the Premier League trophy, and last season, under Erik ten Hag and then Ruben Amorim, they finished 15th in the standings. It was their lowest league position since 1973-74, the season they were last relegated.

A fresh start under Carrick

This season, and in recent weeks specifically, United have enjoyed a new lease on life under interim manager Michael Carrick, who replaced Amorim on Jan. 13.

Carrick has won his first four games in charge, and United travel to West Ham on Tuesday full of confidence as they look to make it five in a row. One fan in particular is certainly hoping his team makes it happen.

Five in a row feels like ancient history

Given the chaos that has surrounded the club in recent years, you would be forgiven for thinking United’s most recent five-game winning streak belongs to a bygone era. But there is no need to rewind all the way to the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson to find it.

In fact, the 13-time Premier League champions last won five games in a row less than two years ago, when optimism was high that ten Hag would be the man to restore regular success at Old Trafford.

Manchester United’s last five-game winning streak

Between Jan. 28, 2024, and Feb. 18, 2024, ten Hag guided United to successive victories against Newport County in the FA Cup, followed by Wolves, West Ham, Aston Villa and Luton Town in the league. The run came to an end with a 2-1 home defeat to Fulham on Feb. 24.

How United compare to the rest of the league

While that run is not especially distant in footballing terms, 723 days without a five-game winning streak places United 14th among the current 20 Premier League teams for the longest wait, according to Opta Analyst.

Chelsea achieved the feat most recently on Jan. 31, with Aston Villa and Manchester City tied for second after doing so on Dec. 27. League leaders Arsenal are the only other side to manage it in the last 100 days, completing their run on Nov. 4.

At the other end of the spectrum, Fulham (Jan. 12, 2023), Bournemouth (Oct. 30, 2021), Sunderland (March 17, 2021), West Ham (Jan. 26, 2021), Everton (Oct. 3, 2020) and Brentford (July 15, 2020) have endured the longest waits for five straight victories.

Fast forward a few hours, and there could be a new name at the top of this particular table.
