England manager Sarina Wiegman asserted that her side are seeking revenge for themselves when they return to Leuven for their Nations League clash with Belgium.
Wiegman's side are currently top of their Nations League group, with nine points and a perfect record heading into Tuesday's match.
They ran riot over Belgium on Friday, cruising to a 5-0 win at Ashton Gate with Lucy Bronze, Millie Bright, Aggie Beever-Jones, Jess Park, and Keira Walsh all getting on the scoresheet.
Nonetheless, Wiegman insists that the Lionesses have some poor memories from their visit to Leuven in 2023, where their defeat cost them a qualifying place in the 2024 Olympic Games.
"How I see tomorrow is that we really want to kind of get revenge on ourselves. We want to show that we are better than we were then, and we can do a lot better," she said.
"How I experienced that game [in 2023] is that we didn't play our best, and it was off the back of the World Cup, so we were struggling with our levels."
This time, the Lionesses arrive in far better form, having already beaten world champions Spain 1-0 at Wembley earlier this year.
But injuries have plagued the squad and Wiegman will have to make do without some key players, such as Chelsea forward Lauren James and Arsenal duo Alessia Russo and Chloe Kelly – all of whom withdrew from the squad due to injury.
"LJ [James] picked up a hamstring injury so will be assessed with her club but is of course not available for tomorrow.
"It is the same for Alessia [Russo]. She had to go back to Arsenal to be assessed and is hopefully back soon."
Weigman maintained a hopeful outlook when asked about the severity of the injuries, adding: "No, I hope not. But time will tell."
England have been struck by some other key injuries as well, with Lauren Hemp, Georgia Stanway and Alex Greenwood all currently recovering from knee injuries.
Weigman was unable to provide a timeline for their return but added that she is hopeful they will be fit for this summer's Euros, which kicks off in July in Switzerland.
"I hope they'll be back. I can't give any timings. We just have a lot of hopes that they'll be back and performing and healthy," said Wiegman.
"We know what the schedule looks like and where we're at now but it could change tomorrow.
"I wouldn't say it's a worry, but it's just something that affects [things] and we are trying to get time schedules right for players to come back as soon as possible.”
In light of the absences, Brighton forward Michelle Agyemang, currently on loan from Arsenal, has received her first senior call-up, while Jess Naz also joined the squad.
"[Agyemang] was at St George's Park because they qualified for the Euros with the under-19s," said Wiegman.
"It was really nice. She's very excited, and she showed up straight away in the training session today."
The Lionesses play Belgium on Tuesday before rounding off the group stage with fixtures against Portugal and Spain ahead of the Euros.
