The 21-year-old continues to impress for club and country and his team-mate is enjoying thriving alongside him in midfield
Georginio Wijnaldum has hailed Frenkie de Jong's impact on the Netherlands team, saying the midfielder makes them play better.
The 21-year-old has become an important part of the Oranje squad since making his debut in a 2-1 win over Peru in September and helped them finish first in their UEFA Nations League group as they beat France and drew with Germany this month.
De Jong's performances for Ajax have attracted interest from Barcelona and Manchester City, as he has been highlighted as one of the best young players in Europe.
And Liverpool star Wijnaldum says De Jong has excelled since establishing himself in Ronald Koeman's team and feels he is benefiting from playing alongside him.
"With his dribbles he always ensures there is a good connection from defence to midfield and from midfield to attack," Wijnaldum told Voetbal International.
"He is always able to create space because he is a) always available and b) with his actions he creates many situations: he forces opponents to choose, they have to come out of position, lose their marker, which can automatically make space or give us a free man. That makes it easier for me to play football. I am someone who naturally likes to move. With Frenkie, I can play much more in the possession, so that in certain situations I also get closer to the opponent's goal. The goals against Germany and France are good examples. I can get there on time now, whereas it was much more difficult for me, because I played a controlling role.
"[He is] so good and special that in Netherlands you don't hear anyone say he must play faster when he starts dribbling. I find that special. I know, the ball is always faster, but sometimes you have to let players dribble to make a difference.
"Now young players get to hear that they are taking it too far, while I think: 'No, let them develop it!' Why do you think we were able to play that stiff French team from time to time? That has to do with the skills of the Dutch players. If you have that in your team, that's a blessing."
Netherlands have improved dramatically since Koeman replaced Dick Advocaat at the helm in February, and Wijnaldum believes the midfield has become a pivotal part of the team since De Jong's introduction.
"In the 5-3-2 system I had a controlling job alongside Kevin Strootman. In itself it's no problem, but you depend on what is happening around you," he added.
"With a bit of shuffling it becomes a 3-4-3, which is already a lot more attacking. The only problem is that you basically defend very close to your own half and that the spaces are in front, but you can't always get there very quickly.
"Now we play with three midfielders, one of whom is a holder and two in an attacker role. That suits me much better, while Frenkie de Jong ensures that we also play better as a team."

He is a mixture of Modric and Toni Kroos. What a brilliant future for this kid if he joins Guardiola.

Ikr, I would love to have both him and Guardiola in Barca. Valverde would probably kill the kids confidence.

Of course heck’s an Ajax player, the club that has the best Academy in the world; Cruyff, Van Basten, Neeskens, Krol, Muehren, Bergkamp, Schneider and Van Der Vaart to name a few.

Even during Pellegrini's time he used to play as a CM rather then a DM I don't see him as Casemiro, he's obviously a lot more confident on the ball and a lot more forward thinking. But I see him as much, much closer to Casemiro and other standard DMs than to Frenkie De Jong.

I agree with you 100% and I think De Jong would be wasted as a typical regista. What's so good about him is his positioning and ability to fake/dribble and lose players in the right moment.

The one player who can solve man utd's midfield conundrum. But we all know it won't happen.

Promises about the team's play style - one of those aforementioned "better promises," redundant with the manager. But also why would De Jong believe any promises about the team's play style given what he just watched between these two teams?

Frenkie de jong has enjoyed a mateoric rise that has seen him establish himself as a starter for both club and country. The truth is that he is a boy who breathes talent. He has self confidence, personality, doesn't hide and asks for the ball. He has that particular DNA of our game. I hope we'll get to sign him.

He looks like a smart player but that league is soft. I’m not sure if he will be able to do this in premier league. He will be out for a month in his first game.

Jorginho is one thing, but both De Jong and Kovacic would be painfully wasted as registas, their best qualities are dynamism and moving forward with he ball, exploiting spaces.

Where do you think de jong plays for Ajax and the netherlands? He certainly doesn't play as a DM For Ajax he plays all over, for the Netherlands he plays as an 8 in a midfield 3.

If this happens then I hope Foden leaves. Foden's not leaving, he and De Jong occupy different roles. We want De Jong as Fernandinho's replacement, he'll be 34 next year.

You definitely do, Manchester City is kinda stacked in every role apart from DM so either De Jong or (I find it very unlikely but it would be possible) Stones would move to DM and they could go for de Ligt

If you keep buying you’ll keep loosing. Got Leroy Sane, lost Jordan Sancho. If you get De Jong maybe Foden decides he wants to go too. You don’t need De Jong now but you very well may need Foden later.

Based on their recent movements, i'm surprised that Real didn't even think about De Jong or De Ligt. Both have great future, are Europeans, and arguably more tried & tested than South American players. Its not exactly comparable with Vinicius & Rodrygo transfer, but you get my point.
