Wijnaldum on Van Dijk's recovery: He's going through hell

Virgil van Dijk picked a serious knee injury that will sideline him for several months and his teammate Georginio Wijnaldum has stressed that his compatriot is going through a tough moment.

Liverpool's centre-back has undergone surgery and has already begun his recovery process after picking up the injury following a nasty Jordan Pickford challenge in his team's game against Everton back in October.

"Virgil will return with the will of God," Wijnaldum told Voetbal International. "It is a difficult moment for him, as this is the worst thing you can live as a footballer.

"He is going through hell, but I think he is very strong. We do FaceTime from time to time and that is very pleasant."

Van Dijk's participation in the European Championship which is set to be held next summer is highly doubtful. Meanwhile, Holland are set to face Spain in a friendly game on Wednesday as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday and Poland in one week for the Nations League.
