Liverpool have won more Premier League points in home matches than any other side in 2025 (36), winning 11 of their 15 league games at Anfield (D3 L1). In rebounding from defeat to Manchester United, the Reds ensured they haven’t lost consecutive top-flight home matches since March 2021.
Liverpool finally ended their losing run in the Premier League with a much-needed 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch were enough for Arne Slot’s men, who had to hold their breath at times against a Villa side in form, but ultimately they saw out a deserved victory, ending a run of four losses prior.
They climb up to third in the table, level on points with second-place Bournemouth ahead of their trip to Manchester City on Sunday, but remain seven points behind leaders Arsenal after the Gunners beat Burnley earlier in the day.
The Reds came into the game having lost each of their last four league games, and six of their last seven in all competitions. Confidence was low, but after a bit of a nervy start, this was largely Liverpool back to their best.
Slot made 10 changes for his team’s humbling 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace in the EFL cup in midweek with more than one eye on this game, and the pair of Andy Robertson and Alexis Mac Allister were the only players from Wednesday to keep their place in the starting lineup.
Morgan Rogers almost added to Liverpool’s woes in the fifth minute as Villa broke on the hosts, but his shot from the edge of the box struck the post and came out.
Liverpool looked shaky at times in the opening quarter, but a nice flowing move in the 15th minute gave Dominik Szoboszlai a chance to shoot from just over 20 yards, but the Hungarian dragged his effort just wide.
The hosts looked bright for a few minutes after that, but almost fell behind when a deflected cross from Matty Cash that was arrowing inside the near post was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Rogers forced another save from the Georgian goalkeeper soon after, before Szoboszlai nicked the ball off Villa’s defence in the final third at the other end, but his finish was tame and easily saved by Emiliano Martínez, who then parried a free-kick from Szoboszlai in the 33rd minute.
Liverpool thought they had the lead in the 43rd minute when Szoboszlai crossed for Hugo Ekitiké to head in, but a VAR check showed the French striker was offside.
The frustration from that didn’t last though, as just three minutes later, a misplaced pass from Martínez to Pau Torres went straight to Salah, who made no mistake as he put the ball into the empty Villa net.
That goal was Salah’s 250th for Liverpool, making him only the third player to reach that landmark for the club after Roger Hunt (285) and Ian Rush (346). It also drew him level with Wayne Rooney for most goal involvements for a single club in the Premier League (276).
It was more sloppy passing from the visitors that led to the second just before the hour. A long ball hit straight to Virgil van Dijk allowed a swift Liverpool attack, which ended with Gravenberch hitting a shot from just outside the box that took a deflection off Torres and flew past Martínez.
The Dutch midfielder has scored three goals in his last 10 games for Liverpool, just one fewer than he managed in his first 87 appearances for the club across all competitions.
Villa’s first effort of the second half came from substitute Ross Barkley after they played their way through the middle of Liverpool, but the former Everton’s shot from range was easy for Mamardashvili.
The visitors tried to get back into the game, with another sub in Donyell Malen firing wide of the near post, before Barkley had a shot from around 12 yards out blaze over the bar.
Liverpool had chances to add a third on the counter but Salah picked the wrong option both times to let Villa off the hook.
As if it hadn’t been a bad enough night for Unai Emery, Tyrone Mings hobbled off with what appeared to be a hamstring issue in stoppage time.
