Wolfsburg 0-1 Bayern: Olise scores winner as Harry Kane misses penalty

Michael Olise scored a spectacular second-half winner as Bayern Munich beat Wolfsburg 1-0, setting up an enthralling Bundesliga relegation clash next week.

Match Report

Wolfsburg, who sit 16th, will now go into their final-day meeting with 17th-place St. Pauli on the same points.

If Dieter Hecking's team avoid defeat, they will go into the relegation play-off, but should they lose, Wolfsburg will be playing in the second tier next season.

Olise's 56th-minute stunner condemned Wolfsburg to defeat at the Volkswagen Arena, where Vincent Kompany's team bounced back from their Champions League semi-final heartbreak.

The hosts carved out the first chance after five minutes as Vinicius Souza met Patrick Wimmer's far-post cross with a thumping point-blank header that Jonas Urbig somehow saved with his face.

Bayern regained control from there, with Tom Bischof seeing a brilliant 25-yard piledriver crash into the post, before Leon Goretzka dragged the rebound wide of the target.

The visitors were handed an opportunity to take the lead 11 minutes before the break as Olise was dragged down inside the box by Konstantinos Koulierakis, but Harry Kane made a rare misstep from 12 yards out, firing his spot kick wide of the target.

Urbig was called into action again shortly after, producing smart saves to deny Denis Vavro's long-range drive and Christian Eriksen on the rebound.

Bayern finally found the breakthrough in sensational fashion as Olise cut onto his favoured left foot and curled a superb strike in off the underside of the crossbar.

That strike looked to have sealed the result, but Mattias Svanberg squandered a golden opportunity for Wolfsburg late on as he struck the post from close range after failing to beat Urbig.

Data Debrief: Bayern make Wolfsburg pay for profligacy

Bayern have now scored in their last 45 games in the Bundesliga – their longest scoring streak in the league since a run of 87 between February 2020 to September 2022.

Indeed, Kompany's side have now scored in all 33 of their Bundesliga matches this season, more than any other team in the league.

But Wolfsburg can consider themselves highly unfortunate. They created 3.07 expected goals to Bayern's 1.86 xG. While Olise's touch of class proved decisive, the hosts simply lacked composure down at the other end.

Olise now has 34 Bundesliga goal involvements this term, with 19 of those being assists. He heads into the final day two shy of Thomas Muller's single-season record in the competition (21, set in 2019-20).

Jamal Musiala took over the playmaking responsibilities here, creating four chances in total, though none of those resulted in a goal.
