World Cup: Fired-up Tim Cahill urges Australia to get NASTY before win over Peru

Previously unseen footage of Tim Cahill inspiring Australia to clinch their place at the World Cup has emerged, with the Socceroos legend telling Graham Arnold's side to get nasty against Peru.

Australia have featured in the previous four editions of football's biggest tournament and Cahill has played a major role in delivering the Socceroos to the grand stage, but they had to reach Qatar without his help earlier this year.

Arnold's side made tough work of qualifying and lost out to Saudi Arabia and Japan in their group, so needed wins over the UAE and Peru to advance.

And now Football Australia has disclosed the rousing speech that Cahill gave to the squad prior to their double header, in which he stressed the significance of representing the Socceroos.

'Why are you here? It's the most important thing,' he said. 'You know why you play for the country. The badge. What it means.

'You actually have the biggest games of your lives ever ahead of you on behalf of your families first. Your families. Think about them, and then, your country.

'Twenty to thirty million people sitting at home waiting for you guys to deliver something that the other generations delivered.'

Cahill went on to implore the team not to be 'nice players' and to fight for a place in the World Cup.

'What matters now is are you going to go that extra mile to fight for each other? Just don't be a nice footballing team. That's not us.

'Don't be nice players. I told it to the leadership group the other day. Don't be easy to beat. Don't be bullied. Have a bit of pride with who we are as an 11 or as a 16.'

Andrew Redmayne certainly listened to Cahill's advice, with his antics during the penalty shootout - including throwing away the water bottle of the Peruvian goalkeeper containing detailed instructions pertaining to Australia's penalty takers - playing a big role in their qualification.

Cahill has been deeply involved in the Socceroos camp heading into this year's tournament. He was integral in finding Australia a training base for their stay in Qatar - the Aspire Academy - and he was pictured visiting one of their sessions on Tuesday.
