The 91,553 spectators who gathered in the stands of the Camp Nou for the Women's Champions League quarter-final second leg between Barcelona and Real Madrid made history on Wednesday.
The game set the record the largest-ever attendance for a women's football match, surpassing the 90,185 who attended the final of the 1999 World Cup between the United States and China.
It was a day of celebration for Barcelona fans and women's soccer fans in general.
After a rainy start to the day in Barcelona, the weather improved before and during the match. Thousands of people, including a considerable number of women and children, waved their flags and scarves cheering the Blaugrana on their arrival at the stadium, encouraging the players with chants and creating a real atmosphere. Real Madrid were greeted with deafening whistles.
Although there were several activities organised around the Camp Nou, the fans waited in line from early in the evening to enter the stadium.
Back to the stadium
During the match, the fans didn't stop cheering and encouraging their players. The seven goals that the players scored on the pitch helped, with the Catalans winning 5-2 to follow up their first-leg win.
There was a mosaic, a lights display, and several chants. At the end there was time for the home players to walk around the stadium to show their appreciation for the fans who had come to watch.
The previous best-ever attendance for a club match was the 30,814 for the LaLiga Iberdrola clash between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in 2019.
