Xabi Alonso reacts to Vinicius Junior criticism, Rodrygo Goes speculation

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso spoke on a number of topics during his pre-match press conference for Sunday’s trip to Real Oviedo, and as expected, he was asked to give his reaction to several talking points.

This week has seen more criticism aimed at Vinicius Junior, who was not at his best again during Real Madrid’s narrow victory over Osasuna. As per Diario AS, Alonso was asked about Vinicius’ place in the starting line-up going forward.

“I already said the other day that the context of the World Cup is a little different. We’ve only played one game and the statistics have to be taken with a grain of salt. All the players are important and I count on them and since I make the call-up anyone can be a starter. I see him well. We have been in the season for a very short time. We are just getting started. Everyone is looking forward to having a good year and they are all with a good predisposition. That is fundamental.”

Alonso also spoke on Rodrygo, who continues to be linked with a move away from Real Madrid before the end of the summer transfer window.

“For me the season has just started. We’ve only played one game. All the decisions to play and select the line-up are mine, solely and exclusively. I talk to many players and I’ve spoken to Rodrygo too, of course.”

Alonso was also asked about Kylian Mbappe, who is working his way back to form after an illness-affected Club World Cup earlier in the summer.

“I’m going to try to help him and for him to help the team win games. He is a fundamental part of the team. The better the pieces fit together will be one of the keys to the season to be able to play as a team.”
