Following Spain's 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in their second FIFA World Cup group-stage match, Yamal spoke to Cadena SER.
In this match against Saudi Arabia, you scored Spain's opening goal, which was also your first FIFA World Cup goal for your country. How do you assess this victory?
Our objective was to win this match. We quickly established a commanding lead in the first half, which gave me the opportunity to ease off somewhat. It was an ideal performance, and now we need to prepare for Uruguay.
You scored in the 10th minute. We noticed that you seemed to hold back during sprints at times. How would you describe your current physical condition?
If this were the final, I would give 100%. But we are being sensible. The score was already 3-0 in the 40th minute, so I could not maintain maximum intensity throughout. It is about pacing ourselves and staying composed. That is not always easy for me, but the coach is there to remind me. I am delighted with the victory.
Scoring your first FIFA World Cup goal for Spain, with all the fans behind you, you appeared very composed. What did that moment mean to you, especially scoring for Spain, one of the tournament favorites?
The love and support everyone has shown me has been truly incredible and gives me extra strength on the pitch. My first goal was very special. Seeing my mother, family, friends, and girlfriend celebrating with me was the best feeling. The fans also gave me wonderful applause and cheers, even during the warm-up.
From the start, you were clearly eager to break through the defense, just as you were in training last week. Do you feel a sense of responsibility? Despite your youth, everyone has high expectations of you, and the national team has shown great faith in you. Do you feel that pressure?
No. Rodri is a Ballon d'Or winner, and I believe Pedri is the best midfielder in the world. We also have Nico, Olmo, Cucurella, and Oyarzabal, who was named today's MVP. I think we are all excellent players. Of course, if I can help the team in any way, I will. We are all world-class, which is why we are favorites to win the tournament.
As Luis de la Fuente said yesterday, Lamine Yamal, almost every word you say becomes a headline. After the Cape Verde match, there was significant debate in Spain.
I compete seriously even when playing video games, let alone in a situation like this. We want to move on quickly from the result of the last match, but our mentality has not changed—we are determined to win every game. Now we are focused on Uruguay.
