Zubimendi responds to chance of making ManCity transfer after snubbing Liverpool

Martin Zubimendi has reaffirmed his desire to remain at Real Sociedad despite speculation over interest from Mancheser City.

The Spain midfielder was widely expected to join Liverpool after Euro 2024 success with his international side, and drew interest from across Europe. The 25-year-old appeared to have agreed a deal to make the move to Anfield but ultimately decided to remain in the Basque region.

Real Sociedad have endured a difficult start to the season, with just two La Liga wins in their opening nine matches. Zubimendi has been close to everpresent for the side and has captured the attention of Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola's side are considering a move for a defensive midfielder after Rodri was ruled out for the season. Zubimendi remains focused on staying in San Sebastian however.

"There are always rumours but so far I’ve always thought that the best solution for me is staying at Real Sociedad, "I’ve still a lot of things to give to this club, I still want to grow and develop here."

Rodri's injury has moved Zubimendi up the pecking order for Spain for matches against Denmark and Serbia. Los Rojos boss Luis de la Fuente has already declared his charge as the second best midfielder in the world behind his injured teammate.

"I don't want to anticipate anything, there are two of us for that position and it's a shame that it's due to injury, especially when he's a vital player, but a window has opened that we'll have to make the most of," said Zubimendi of the situation.

Speaking earlier this month, Zubimendi hit back at the suggest he regretted his decision to remain with Real Sociedad. He told reporters: “My philosophy is to do what I feel at all times.

"So far, things have gone well for me. It is true that there was a lot of noise. I went through uncomfortable moments. The best thing for me was to stay here and I am happy and at peace. There is a lot of noise because of the press but in the end everything is easier than all that.”

"Of course I don't regret it, I can't think that after four or five games at the start of the season," he added. "I made my decision from within, I thought it was the best thing to do, the results don't affect me. I see potential in this team, you just have to watch us train and I'm excited about having a good season."
