AF Today: 14 years ago, Messi became the first player to score 5 in a UCL match

In 2012, Lionel Messi scored five goals against Leverkusen, crowning him the first player to achieve this accomplishment in the history of UEFA Champions League.

2012 is Messi's absolute year of magic. In a single calendar year, Messi scored 91 goals across all competitions, making him the only one to score these many goals in any football competition. Until today, Messi's five goals against Leverkusen is the only non-penalty scoring performance in UCL tournament. Although 2011/12 season is not a fruitful season for Barca, especially the defeat to Chelsea in UCL semi-final, this historic record still marks an indispensable milestone in Messi's career.
