According to Agustín Martín, a reporter for Diario AS, Real Madrid midfielder Valverde, who has been sidelined for nearly three weeks with a grade three sprain of his left ankle, is expected to make his return. He will undergo a test on Friday to determine if he can be included in Saturday's squad against Villarreal.
Reports indicate that Valverde missed Uruguay national team matches during this international break due to an injury sustained in the September 20 derby against Atlético Madrid. The Uruguayan midfielder was subjected to a fierce tackle by Atlético player Lee Kang-in during the match and has been out of action ever since. Now, almost three weeks after the injury, he is expected to be fit for Real Madrid's first match after the league resumes.
Valverde will be tested in the final training session before the match to determine if he can help Real Madrid against Villarreal.
In the Madrid derby, in the 45th minute, Atlético player Lee Kang-in committed a reckless tackle that caught Valverde's left ankle. However, the referee, Ortiz, only awarded a foul and did not show a yellow card to the Korean player. VAR also did not alert the referee to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
After the match, Real Madrid issued a medical report from Valdebebas, stating that further examinations would be conducted once the swelling in the player's ankle subsided.
The first medical report stated: "Following examinations conducted today by the Real Madrid medical services on our club player Valverde, it has been confirmed that he suffered severe trauma to his left ankle during this afternoon's match. Valverde will undergo further examinations in the coming hours."
Two days later, Valverde underwent another examination, and Real Madrid subsequently issued a second medical report: "Following examinations conducted today by the Real Madrid medical services on our club player Valverde, it has been confirmed that he has a grade three sprain of his left ankle. His recovery will be monitored."
At the time, Real Madrid expected Valverde to be out for approximately three weeks, and that estimated recovery period is now coming to an end.
Since his injury, Valverde has been receiving treatment at Valdebebas, including physical therapy and specialized recovery training, most of which has taken place in the gym.
The club has also kept his recovery low-profile to avoid any controversy. However, in a photo from a club event this Wednesday, Valverde could be seen on the grass wearing football boots.
On Friday, Valverde will undergo further tests to determine his availability for the Villarreal match. If he is unable to make it, Real Madrid may also choose to let him continue to rest and prepare for the upcoming Champions League match against Roma, the home game against Sevilla, and the Clásico at the end of the month.
Among these, the Clásico at the end of the month is crucial for Real Madrid's season objectives.
Valverde is one of the key figures in the Real Madrid dressing room and a player heavily relied upon by Mourinho. So far this season, Real Madrid has played 8 official matches, and Valverde is one of four players who have started all of them.
The other three players are Courtois, Vinicius, and Mbappé. However, only Courtois and Mbappé have played all 720 minutes.
