Aguero reveals sensational bet that Messi would win the Golden Ball award

Sergio Aguero has revealed his sensational prediction that Argentina's Lionel Messi would win the World Cup Golden Ball award.

The PSG forward ended his career-long wait to lift football's most prestigious trophy after Sunday's final  saw Argentina emerge victorious against France after a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win.

His former team-mate Aguero was present to support the national team throughout the competition and further proved his allegiance by sharing a bet he placed in November.

Taking to Instagram, Aguero shared a screenshot of the bet with his followers before admitting he only 'just realised' what he had staked.

'On November 17, I bet that the best player in the World Cup would be Messi and I just realized it,' the former Manchester City striker wrote.

It showed that the retired star placed a bet of $1001 (£823) for Messi to win the accolade prior to the World Cup commencing.

The PSG forward ended the campaign with seven goals and three assists before being crowned the best player of the tournament.

Messi winning the award meant Aguero's bet returned a whopping $8264 (£6,800).

Aguero was present throughout Argentina's World Cup campaign and helped provide support for his team-mates both on and off the pitch.

He took part in the wild celebrations that ensued throughout the night in Doha after Argentina's historic penalty shoot-out win over France.

Messi scored a brace in the match - with a first-half penalty and extra-time effort - before slotting away his spot-kick in the shoot-out that followed.

A hat-trick from France's Kylian Mbappe in the 3-3 draw proved futile as Messi and Argentina stormed to victory for the first time in the competition since 1986.
