Ajax give Valencia a 3-0 lesson at Mestalla

Valencia's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages took a serious blow on Wednesday night as they fell to a 3-0 home defeat to Ajax.

Last season's semi-finalists outplayed Albert Celades' side at Mestalla, leaving Los Che in second place but level on points with Chelsea in Group H.

Hakim Ziyech opened the scoring for the visitors with a stunning strike from long range that flew over Jasper Cillessen and dropped under the crossbar.

Valencia had the chance to equalise from 12 yards when Edson Alvarez fouled Goncalo Guedes in the penalty area, but Dani Parejo blazed his spot-kick over the bar.

Donny van de Beek was the provider for Ajax's second later in the first half as he set up Quincy Promes to slot past Cillessen.

Van de Beek got himself on the scoresheet midway through the second period, latching on to Dusan Tadic's pass and finding the bottom corner.

Valencia now face back-to-back games with Lille, heading to France for matchday three before hosting the Ligue 1 side at Mestalla on matchday four.
