Xabi Alonso insisted that he was not worried about Real Madrid's recent form despite watching his team draw for the third consecutive LaLiga match against Girona on Sunday.
Los Blancos had previously been held by Rayo Vallecano and Elche, which increased the pressure to maintain their place at the top of the table and rivals Barcelona.
But despite the best efforts of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, Madrid were only able to salvage a point after falling behind to Azzedine Ounahi's stunning 45th-minute strike.
Madrid saw two goals ruled out either side of the break after VAR reviews – the first from Mbappe for a handball and the second from Vinicius after the Brazilian strayed offside.
Mbappe restored parity from the penalty spot, but the draw marks the first time Madrid have recorded three straight league stalemates within a single season since December 2019 under Zinedine Zidane.
Despite collecting just one win from their last five matches in all competitions (D3 L1), Alonso chose to focus on the positives.
"I liked the reaction today; it wasn't enough, but we were close," the Spaniard told AS.
"We have to maintain the unity we have, with the necessary self-criticism. We're eager to win away from home, something that has affected us a lot in this schedule.
"A season has different phases. There were times, especially at the beginning, when we were consistent.
"And lately, there have been phases... today, the second half was much better than the first. And we were able to come back.
"The team was eager to overcome the 1-0 deficit. But we lacked the finishing touch. We had three or four clear chances inside the box to score the second goal and win.
"But we have to maintain the high standards that come with playing for Real Madrid."
Indeed, Madrid did create plenty of opportunities, particularly after the break, but were wasteful throughout. In total, they managed 25 shots, but only hit the target four times.
Only Real Betis have had more shots in a LaLiga match without winning this season, registering 28 in a 2-2 draw with Levante.
Despite their underwhelming recent performances and rumours in the media about a rift in the dressing room between players and coach, Alonso insisted that there is plenty of time left in the season and that Madrid remain firmly in the fight.
"In the second half, especially, there was improvement; we pushed forward and created more chances," he added.
"We had enough opportunities to win. But we lacked accuracy, not winning. We're still in the mix, it's a long season, and we have to keep going.
"We lacked the ability to play more good, attacking football, to be dominant. We did much more of that in the second half, and that's what we want.
"Why didn't we achieve it? That's what we need to analyse, look at, and try to do from the start. Or maintain that level in the second half, if we did it in the first.
"I said it the other day in the press conference, and it’s somewhat the same thing today."

Without penalties (I am talking about both valid and invalid ones) Madrid would be on 4th position on league table! When you have fast dribblers like Mbappe and Vini it’s okay to get Penalties, but how much Madrid depends on penalties for the win is absolute joke!

What a disappointment he turn up to be! I thought he was gonna bring some version of tiki taka but we have a Madrid team without a leader and weak players: left back needs to go, hujisun needs to go. Camavinga needs to go. Rudiger, ascenssio and militao need to go. What a let down. Can’t beat atletico! Beat barca by the grace of god not because they were the better team! Drew last la liga games against b teams and and and and

Despite holding a lead of over five points, the team has now fallen to second place. There appears to be a clear lack of chemistry: the midfield is not functioning effectively, there is no natural striker with Mbappé deployed wide, and Vinicius seems detached from the team’s rhythm. Camavinga has not shown the expected development, while Bellingham’s performances have lacked consistency. Overall, the squad appears disjointed and lacking cohesive teamwork. With this pace the coach will require 2-3 seasons to get the team back on track!
It's just the beginning

Drawing 3 matches in a row against relegation candidates is what this novice calls high standard 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the only trophy he'll win this season is beating Barca in the first El Clasico if he doesn't change
Is a good sign

Rodrygo showed what Real Madrid is missing when he came on, he deserves a starting place in the next match he brought life to the right wing though Alonso is stubborn enough to stick to the drawing team again next match

anyone who disagrees with this doesn't know football. you are totally right . also guler and Jude should not play together, every time they started together Real play badly. one of them has to come in the second especially guler, he has vision but lacks physicality.

The fact of the matter is Real Madrid have an inexperience coach. Secondly, they lack a centre forward bringing Mbappe is the worst mistake he distort the chemistry of the team.He always operates in the left wing colliding with vinicius and leaving the middle wide open making it easier for defenders to close down. I know many of my fellow Madrid fans will disagree with me , but as long as Mbappe continues to play as the centre forward Madrid will never win a major trophy such as the champions league
