Argentina's left flank in crisis as Tagliafico set to miss World Cup opener

According to Argentine media outlet Tycsports, the Argentine national team's left flank is facing serious injury concerns, with Tagliafico largely ruled out of the FIFA World Cup opener.

Tagliafico and N. Gonzalez both have varying degrees of physical issues, especially since the defender has been confirmed to miss the first match, leaving Scaloni without a natural option on the team's left side.

Only four days remain until Argentina's first 2026 FIFA World Cup match, where they will face Algeria at 9 AM on June 17th Beijing time (CEST). Before the match, the coaching staff needs to address the injury problems on the team's left flank, which is currently a cause for concern.

On Thursday morning local time, the injury situation for the Argentine team seemed to be easing, with only Damian Martinez and Paredes' recovery progress to await. However, news then emerged of two more players experiencing discomfort, raising alarms. While their participation in the FIFA World Cup is not at risk in principle, both Tagliafico and N. Gonzalez have experienced issues.

Tagliafico has a muscle injury, which almost certainly rules him out of starting the opening match against Algeria. The problem is in his soleus muscle, stemming from his start in the friendly against Honduras. Consequently, he did not start, or even make the bench, for the subsequent match against Iceland.

N. Gonzalez, on the other hand, has muscle overload, which makes the situation uncertain as he arrived in the US with a tear. After recovering, the left-footed player got playing time again against Iceland, but experienced discomfort again after the match. Although it's only a cramp in principle, it still gives the head coach a headache.

In such circumstances, Scaloni faces difficulty arranging the left flank, especially the defense. Against Algeria, without Tagliafico, Argentina has no other natural left-back. Medina is an alternative for this position, but he is primarily a center-back who plays as the left-sided center-back in a three-man defense at Olympique Marseille. While he can play on the left, his offensive attributes are not as strong as Tagliafico's.

If Scaloni wants to field a bolder starting lineup, N. Gonzalez would have also been an option for this position. Although he is a winger, he has been deployed in this role during Scaloni's tenure. Finally, only Barco remains on the roster. He is now considered a midfielder and plays in this position for Strasbourg, but he started his career as a full-back at Boca Juniors.

Furthermore, this situation also raises questions about Argentina's entire left flank, as the two injured players are precisely the ones Scaloni usually uses to provide width on that side. With Di Maria no longer on the roster, there are fewer left-footed players who can operate on the wing. For the opening match against Algeria, Thiago Almada, who is right-footed, was originally expected to play in this position. The next few hours will be crucial, as Scaloni needs to further assess each player's condition and confirm their availability.
