Slot has already told Real Madrid how to get best out of Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is closing in on a switch to join Spanish giants Real Madrid at the end of his contract and Arne Slot has now issued some instructions to his new employers

Arne Slot has offered his view on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s best position as he prepares for a move to Real Madrid. The defender looks set to move to the Spanish side this summer at the end of his Reds contract.

Reports have suggested that Alexander-Arnold is in advanced talks with Real regarding a Bosman move to the Santiago Bernabeu. He has reportedly agreed a five-year deal with the Spanish side, while he is seen as a replacement for club icon Dani Carvajal.

And while he will be a blockbuster signing for Real, there are some questions over his position. Alexander-Arnold has played in both midfield and defence for Liverpool and England during his time on Merseyside.

And Slot has now offered his view, advice that Carlo Ancelotti will surely listen to as he attempts to fit the defender into his side. Speaking earlier this season, the Dutch head coach said: “I think a position for players is always related to the team.

“It’s also my aim to bring the best out of the player, but the first aim is to bring the best out of the team. It helps if you also bring the best out of a player then. Trent is known for playing as a right full-back, for all his life I think, and when he was a youngster he played in midfield.

“In the modern game, you see a lot of full-backs going into the midfield, that is what he did last season once in a while, and I saw him playing at the Euros in midfield.

“So I think he’s capable of playing both positions really good, and then it’s up to me where I think he could help the team the most.”

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold has also thrown his weight behind the debate as he prepares to become a Real Madrid player. Speaking last year, the England man insisted he sees his best position in defence.

He said: "I’d say I still see myself as a right back, I see myself as someone who can probably play in both positions, if needed. My focus, until I’m told otherwise by the Gaffer [ Jurgen Klopp ] is that I’m still a right back. I come inside and I play inside when we have the ball, but when you write the team sheet, I am a right back."
