Former Arsenal striker Andrei Arshavin officially announced his retirement from football last weekend.
The Russian ended his career at the Kazakhstan club FC Kairat and it is a decade since he was the revelation of the 2008 European Championships.
He started the tournament on the stands due to a two game suspension, but when he returned to action he hit the ground running and assisted his team's efforts to reach the semi-finals.
In the quarter-finals against the Netherlands he produced an extraordinary performance and led Russia, with two assists and one goal, to the upcoming game against Spain.
His team succumbed against Luis Aragones' La Roja, but for him it was a memorable month as he lifted the UEFA Cup with Zenit Saint Petersburg and won the European Super Cup against Manchester United.
Major European powerhouses placed him on their radars and although Barcelona offered 15 million euros, according to Arshavin himself, it was the Gunners who finally signed him in January 2009 for a slightly higher figure.
With Arsenal he scored 31 times, producing an unforgettable performance at Anfield against Liverpool, scoring four goals in one of the best games in the history of the Premier League.
Arshavin couldn't celebrate any title in London, but gave Arsenal their only triumph against the Blaugrana, in the 2011 Champions League campaign.
Upon his return to Zenit he won again the Russian Premier in 2012 and 2015 and left to Kuban Krasnodar, where he didn't manage score a single goal in four months.
Although he was about to retire he made a surprise move to Kairat, where he spent the last three years of his career.

I remember that Eurocopa and all the attention that Arshavin generated, if I did not play in Barsa it was the fault of Zenit who asked for a trade Arshavin for Messi that automatically killed the negotiations, as they say it came out very old at 27 years old. In England it is difficult for promising players to consolidate (I speak only of foreigners) but I won theirs an Uefa cup and a supercopa did not leave empty-handed either.

I explode at 27 years old. A little late, although he has a feeling that Isco (26 years old) will get over it.

Just today I am serving years (starting the thirties) and I found out about this. I remember like it was yesterday at this Arsenal of Van Persie, Fábregas, Eboué, this little rusito that played very well, Rosicky, etc. Which, in turn, reminds me of FIFA 10 (great game, whether on PC or Play).

Player of race, in the style of Shevchenko of Dinamo. If Barcelona had offered what Dembélé spent on arriving late, this boy would have made history in the club culé.

I was surprised by the news. Arshavin doesn't look like he is 37 at all. Good player who commandeered a great Russian national team in the 2012 Europe Cup. Arsenal legend and made the right choice back then. Wish him all the best after retirement.
