Winning the league requires consistancy and efforts. Messi is the reason Barcelona won 8 leagues in last 11 season. On the other hand, winning the KO is more about tactics and attack. You can look at Real Madrid. They had a Ronaldo and a Zidane with was the perfect combination for winning UCL. And they did for 3 times in a row.

Even Manchester united was 2nd in the league (Mourinho's bus lol). Then they bought vvd and alisson, then they really challenged for league. Now this season, they are really winning it.

True but with a forward like Illicic defence isnt usually a struggle imo. Sometimes an impeccable forward line compensates for a bad defence like when Liverpool went UCL final with Lovren and Karius at the back.
