Club Brugge secured a 0-0 draw away at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night to reach the Champions League last 16 for the first time in their history.
The Belgian club, who had previously failed to make it out of the group stages on all nine of their appearances in the modern format of the competition, held firm to frustrate an Atletico side in need of a victory to keep their own hopes of progression alive.
Simon Mignolet was on hand with a number of crucial saves for the visitors, who were denied a first-half penalty after consultation with VAR, and in the end they walked away with a point and a place in the knockout stages despite Kamal Sowah's late red card.
