Barcelona’s starting lineup against Valencia: Lamine headlines the news

Hansi Flick will have to improvise his lineup after a string of injuries, the most surprising of which is Lamine Yamal’s. Until now, the young forward had rarely missed games through injury, but this time groin discomfort combined with back problems has ruled him out of the squad.

Even so, Flick has options to cover the loss. Ferran Torres, in fine form since the German coach took charge, looks the most likely replacement. His presence on the right wing would free up the central striker’s role for Robert Lewandowski, who is still waiting for his first start of the season. The left flank would normally belong to Raphinha, though Marcus Rashford remains an alternative – especially after the Brazilian’s exertions in Bolivia at more than 13,000 feet above sea level.

Midfield also requires reshuffling, given the absences of Frenkie de Jong and Gavi. Marc Casadó is expected to anchor as defensive pivot, with Pedri and Fermín alongside him.

At the back, Alejandro Balde’s injury opens the door for Gerard Martín, while Jules Koundé could reclaim the right-back spot. Ronald Araújo and Pau Cubarsí are set to partner in central defense.

The one area of continuity is in goal: Joan García has been a standout at the start of the campaign, saving points single-handedly, most notably against Rayo Vallecano.

Probable XI: Joan García; Jules Koundé, Ronald Araújo, Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín; Marc Casadó, Pedri, Fermín; Ferran Torres, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha.
