Barcelona explores Rodri acquisition, negotiating terms with Manchester City

According to The Athletic, Barcelona is exploring a deal to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri. Sources close to the negotiations, speaking anonymously, revealed that Barcelona has already negotiated the terms of a potential deal with the club.

Barcelona's project is attractive to Rodri, as the team's playing style aligns with his strengths and he expects a smooth adaptation to the squad. He will reunite with eight Spanish teammates: Joan García, Eric, Cubarsí, Gavi, Olmo, Pedri, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal. Having so many national team colleagues will undoubtedly ease his integration.

The Athletic reported on July 24 that Real Madrid was advancing a deal for Rodri, believing they could reach an agreement with the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner. While Real Madrid agreeing on personal terms with Rodri is not expected to be an issue, negotiations between Real Madrid and Manchester City over the transfer fee remain unresolved. Real Madrid remains interested in Rodri, and now Barcelona has joined the bidding war.

Barcelona has an urgent need for midfield reinforcements, as midfielder Frenkie de Jong suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee and is expected to be sidelined for an extended period, placing considerable pressure on Barcelona's midfield rotation. However, Barcelona must sell players to free up space and strengthen its financial position to advance this deal.

Rodri's contract with Manchester City expires in 12 months, and Manchester City is aware that both Spanish clubs are interested in him. According to previous reports by The Athletic, Rodri has shown little willingness to renew his contract. The 27-year-old Rodri spoke during the April international break about his desire to return to his home country and play in La Liga again, though he also emphasized the appeal of playing for Real Madrid.

Barcelona has already signed winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund this summer. Following Lewandowski's departure, Barcelona aims to sign a new striker and has been pursuing Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez throughout the transfer window.
