Barcelona must sell players to fund major winter transfers due to salary cap constraints

According to Sport, Barcelona's sporting department is exploring a strategic signing in the upcoming winter transfer window. However, due to salary cap restrictions, the club will need to sell a key player if they want to acquire a top-tier talent.

Barcelona's plan for the 2026-27 season was originally to significantly strengthen the squad, as the club anticipated that moving to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys next summer for the Camp Nou roof installation would make it impossible to meet the 1:1 financial fair play rule. For this reason, the sporting department has maintained ambition regarding player movements, but the work is not yet complete. Barcelona still has room to operate in the winter window and is fully willing to use this opportunity to complete a final strategic signing. The club's focus has shifted from the central forward position—a need now less urgent due to Raphinha's emergence—to the defensive line.

The club will still be under the 1:1 rule at that time and maintain a positive salary cap balance, but to bring in a significant new signing, a sale must occur. Everything is currently under evaluation. Deco made good reinforcements to the squad during the summer window, almost completely overhauling the forward line and successfully bringing in Rodri, an unexpected signing that enhanced midfield competitiveness. The sporting department also took the opportunity to secure the future second-choice goalkeeper. However, Deco still has two regrets: failing to sign Julián Álvarez, and more critically, the central defender he prioritized never materialized.

Early in the summer window, Deco vigorously pursued Bastoni, but Flick halted the operation, believing funds should be prioritized for the attack at that time. Although Araujo eventually joined Liverpool on loan, Barcelona ultimately had no room to strengthen the defensive line. The current squad is relatively balanced, but internally, it is still believed that a left-footed centre-back would be highly beneficial for the season's final stretch, especially with Christensen injured again and set to miss many matches this season.

The data is clear: Barcelona's current positive salary cap balance is approximately 3 million euros, which is too low to sign a top-tier player. However, as happened in the summer window, the departure of some important players with limited playing time cannot be ruled out. Alejandro Baldé is still on the transfer market as he won't get much playing time, and Frenkie de Jong's situation also remains uncertain. The Dutch midfielder will return after the international break, and all signs indicate he will see a significant reduction in Flick's starting lineup. If any of these players leave, it will create the space for an interesting signing.

Barcelona has now abandoned the idea of signing a top-tier number 9, as the team's attacking statistics are strong, the offense is functioning well, and they believe Gabriel Jesus can contribute even more. There is no room for an elite centre-forward in the current squad; instead, the defensive line is more stretched. Internal discussions have begun, but the club will not buy simply for the sake of buying. Action will only be taken if the target is a player who can make an immediate impact and become a cornerstone for the team for years to come. Given the quality of the current squad, it is difficult to find a player who could immediately secure a starting spot upon joining. Neither Flick nor Deco have ruled out any possibilities, but nothing has been decided yet. The only certainty is that the club has the ability to invest when necessary, and everything hinges on whether a major sale can create the required salary space and free up available squad numbers.
