Barcelona set for €12 million boost following Spanish Super Cup win

Xavi Hernandez secured his first trophy as the Barcelona coach when his team swept aside Real Madrid 3-1 in the final of the Supercopa Espana.

It was a terrific triumph for the Catalans, who had a point to prove, especially after a defeat in El Clasico earlier on in the season.

Having been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League group stages during the first half of the campaign, the triumph in the Supercup was also important for Barça even from an economic perspective.

According to Adria Soldevila (h/t Reshad Rahman), Barcelona are set for an economic boost of around €12 million for participating and winning the Supercopa Espana.

This should come as a major boost for the Catalans, who had lost a fortune, for their elimination from the Champions League earlier in the season.

Although a figure of €12 million might not seem much, it could help the club balance the books, especially in the midst of their recent altercations with the Financial Fair Play regulations in Spain.

Not to mention, Barcelona are also in talks with Atletico Madrid over the sale of Memphis Depay. If they can squeeze out a fee for the Dutchman, coupled with the revenue from the Supercopa, the Catalans could even be in a position to sign a new player in this January window.

The club have been linked with a move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang recently, although La Liga’s rules dictate the Gabonese international cannot register for an RFEF certificate once again, having left the club during the summer transfer window.

Barcelona are seeking legal possibilities to re-sign the former Dortmund striker, so it will be interesting to see how things transpire over the coming weeks.
