Busquets is finished and other jokes

One of the best features of Spain's memorable Euro 2020 campaign was the manner in which Sergio Busquets answered his critics and the tournament has undone any prejudices.

Before Euro 2020 began, it was claimed that the 32-year-old's best days were behind him, and that he could no longer be the pivotal figure at the base of midfield as he had been as Spain recorded two European Championships and one World Cup between 2008 and 2012.

However, from the moment he returned to the side against Slovakia following his positive COVID-19 test, he has proved his doubters wrong, as he enjoyed a fine campaign and demonstrated that he is still one of the best midfielders in Europe.

When there was the need for distribution, Busquets was there. If the game needed some breaking up with a little foul, Busquets was there. If there was the need for some pressure, Busquets was there. If there was the need to initiate something, Busquets was there. If there was the need to play one touch football, Busquets was there.

Busquets has been the true star of Spain's campaign, given his consistency, personality and authority.

Order on the field benefits him

As a player who works best with a settled team around him playing to his strengths, Busquets has flourished in this Spain team, but could not be asked to do what he was able to 10 years ago.

He has repaid Luis Enrique's faith in handing him the captain's armband this summer, and will be aiming to replicate his form at the World Cup in Qatar next year.
