Cadena SER: Barcelona must not play offensively against PSG, it's suicidal

Cadena SER reports that Barcelona is bracing for its most perilous weeks of the season, but their approach will differ from their usual tactics. Instead, the club has sent an unexpected piece of advice to Flick: attack more cautiously.

The Catalan giants have maintained a perfect record so far this season, but now face two formidable challenges: a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, followed by El Clásico against Real Madrid on Sunday. These two encounters could define the season, despite it only being October.

According to journalist Santi Ovalle on the Spanish radio show "Carrusel" on Cadena SER, Barcelona's management and sporting director have delivered a clear message to Flick: against PSG, he must not employ his usual open, attacking style, which they believe would be suicidal against Luis Enrique's team. The club emphasizes that possession control and patience are crucial.

Ovalle relayed Barcelona's strategy to contain the two-time Champions League winners: "We need to control possession more than ever, attack at a slower pace than usual, and curb PSG's quick transitions."

This extreme caution stems from recent setbacks against Paris. In their last two away encounters, the French side came out victorious. In last season's Champions League group stage, PSG came from behind to win after Ferran Torres opened the scoring, with Mayulu and Gonçalo Ramos scoring in the 90th minute. Ferran Torres now wears the PSG jersey himself.

The season before that, in 2023-2024, Luis Enrique's team inflicted a humiliating 4-1 defeat on Barcelona at Camp Nou to advance, a match where Araujo was sent off and Dembélé, Mbappé, and Vitinha performed exceptionally.

Although Barcelona secured a narrow 3-2 victory on their last visit to the Parc des Princes, what transpired a week later proved that one win was far from enough.

Ovalle concluded his report by posing a question for which everyone awaits an answer: "We will see if Flick follows the management's advice and plays more patiently, or if, as usual, he instructs his players to stick to an attacking approach."

This packed schedule is also accompanied by severe logistical challenges. After Barcelona's 5-2 victory over Real Betis, the team's flight on Saturday night was successively delayed to midnight, 2 AM, and then 4 AM, leaving the entire squad stranded in Seville. Flick had no choice but to take the players back to the hotel for rest. Then, on Monday, their flight to Paris was again delayed due to thick fog over the French capital.
