Carvajal, Getafe's new signing, explained his choice of the No. 14 jersey, hoping the number will bring him the same good luck that his brother-in-law Joselu enjoyed during his time at Real Madrid. He also spoke about his feelings on joining the club during an interview with Getafe's media.
Carvajal, 34, ended his Real Madrid career this summer and will play for Getafe this season. He will continue to live in Madrid and enjoy football. After joining his new team, he hasn't forgotten his Real Madrid experience, and his decision to wear the No. 14 jersey, which he had never worn before in his career, sparked curiosity. This choice is linked to his brother-in-law, Joselu. Besides being relatives by marriage, the two also played alongside each other at the Bernabéu for one season. At that time, Carvajal wore No. 2, while Joselu wore No. 14 for the entire season. This number brought Joselu great success; he won La Liga, the Champions League, and the Spanish Super Cup with the team, and even scored a brace against Bayern in the Champions League semi-finals, becoming instrumental in the team's advancement. Since No. 14 was one of the numbers still available at Getafe, Carvajal chose it without hesitation.
Regarding his jersey number
Carvajal said: "I had to choose between No. 12 and No. 14. I chose 14 because my brother-in-law, Joselu, wore that number at Real Madrid, and he achieved great success. I hope this number brings me the same good luck, because his performance back then was truly outstanding."
Regarding his feelings about joining Getafe
Carvajal said: "It's a great opportunity for me to continue playing in La Liga and to stay in my hometown. Joining a team like Getafe makes me very excited, because in the past few seasons, due to injuries and other factors, I haven't been able to play as consistently as I wished."
Regarding his desire to return to the field
Carvajal said: "I have always been very eager to play. Anyone who knows me knows that I love playing, and football is my passion. This makes my family and me very happy. To be honest, from the very beginning, we've been working to make my move here happen."
Regarding Getafe
Carvajal said: "In my opinion, being able to stay in La Liga for so many years is truly remarkable. The team performed excellently last season and even participated in the Conference League this season. This fully demonstrates that Getafe is a hardworking team that fights until the end, knows its strengths, and can maximize them, which is key to remaining competitive in the top league."
Getafe goalkeeper David Soria, a product of Real Madrid's youth academy, was also one of the key figures in Carvajal's move to the club south of Madrid.
Regarding Soria
Carvajal said: "There was a lot of talk about me joining at the time, and he would ask if I was coming to training. He's a great person and one of the team captains. He spoke very highly of everything here, and I think he deserves some credit for me being here."
Regarding his relationship with coach Bordalás
Carvajal said: "We respect and appreciate each other. I think we will get along very well without any problems. More than just talking about it, I want to prove it with action. Through games, training, in the locker room, and outside the locker room, I want to prove it with actions. I think I can bring my experience to the team, as well as the enthusiasm to play again and return to the field. I will remain humble, respect everyone, and help Getafe achieve its goals."
