Game is over and the final score is Chile 0-0 Ecuador. Here is the match report.
Match Report
The Chilean national team faced Ecuador on equal terms at the National Stadium, but their momentum wasn't reflected on the scoreboard and they ended up with a goalless draw on Matchday 14 of the South American Qualifiers.
From the start of the match, Ricardo Gareca's team was determined to put the lackluster performance they displayed against Paraguay behind them.
Diego Valdés had the first clear chance with a cross in the fourth minute. Despite that initial attempt, the national team fought for possession.
After the first 20 minutes of play, Chile effectively pressured Ecuador's opening, creating two clear opportunities: Vicente Pizarro with a shot from outside the box in the 23rd minute; and a minute later, Darío Osorio missed from an excellent position.
La Roja maintained the pace, keeping the team that arrived in Santiago as runner-up in the Qualifiers at bay, preventing them from getting a clear look at Brayan Cortés' goal , adding attempts from Felipe Loyola and Darío Osorio.
In the first half's stoppage time, Hernán Galíndez was the star of the show with a remarkable double save following a header and subsequent shot from Diego Valdés.
Already in the second half, despite an initial attempt by Arturo Vidal, Ecuador returned to its former glory and began to generate chances, forcing a last-minute tackle by Guillermo Maripán against a charge from debutant Darwin Guagua and a stretch by Brayan Cortés after a good header from Piero Hincapié.
At the hour mark, the national team's wear and tear began to show, with the visiting team more present in their play and physicality. In fact, just in the 83rd minute, there was an attempt by the national team with a weak header from Paulo Díaz, and in the 89th minute, Diego Valdés was unable to connect with a good free kick from Luciano Cabral.
In stoppage time, Ecuador found the winning goal on a counterattack by Enner Valencia, but the goal was disallowed due to a pinpoint offside position.
The 0-0 draw leaves a better impression on the match, but it's not enough for the World Cup dream, with Chile last in the standings and five points from the playoffs, with four matches remaining until the end of the World Cup campaign.
