Controversial Banega penalty ends Valladolid's unbeaten home start

Sevilla inflicted upon Real Valladolid their first home defeat of the season in a hotly contested affair at the Estadio Jose Zorilla on Sunday, courtesy of an controversial Ever Banega penalty.

As Jordi Masip comfortably gathered Nolito's effort on goal, it appeared as though the danger was over for Valladolid. However, that was until VAR intervened and saw a foul on the Sevilla man as he struck the ball.

Masip denied Banega's strike, but the drama was not over. The goalkeeper was deemed to not have at least one foot on the goal line as the ball was struck, leading to a retake.

Banega made no mistake at the second attempt and Sevilla had their noses in front on 13 minutes after a quiet start.

The interval did little to calm down either set of players, as an a scrappy second half ensued.

Valladolid's Nacho somehow managed to avoid a sending off for a rash challenge, while Lucas Ocampos of Sevilla was given his marching orders late on for a second bookable offence.

The nature of the victory will not have bothered Julen Lopetegui one bit, however, as he sees his side end the week in third place, climbing above Atletico Madrid after their 1-1 draw at Granada.
