DFB support Joachim Low to stay as Germany coach

Joachim Low will remain Germany coach for the European Championship next year despite the humiliation of losing 6-0 to Spain earlier this month.

The German Football Association's executives officially decided to keep faith with Low following a meeting on Monday after the coach presented his plans to move the team forward.

'A single game cannot and must not be a yardstick for the general performance of the national team and the national coach,' read a German FA statement after the crunch talks.

It means Low, 60, will take Germany into a seventh major tournament in the rearranged Euros next summer as his 14-year tenure in charge continues.

He came under severe pressure following the six-goal thrashing in Seville in the UEFA Nations League on November 17, the country's heaviest defeat since May 1931.

Low immediately received the backing of national team director Oliver Bierhoff after the defeat and also a vote of confidence the following day from German FA president Fritz Keller.

Now this has been formalised by the 'Presidium' following a telephone conference on Monday morning.

'Low informed those involved about his assessments, ideas and further plans. The members of the executive committee agreed that what counts is the high-quality work of the coaching staff, intact relationship between the team and the coach and a clear concept for the previous and future procedures,' the statement added.

The committee also took into account Germany's straightforward qualification for Euro 2020 - in which they won seven and lost one of their eight matches - and their Nations League performance.

They finished second to Spain in Group A4 and would have qualified for next year's finals had they not suffered the defeat in Seville.

It represented a marked improvement on the 2018-19 Nations League campaign when Die Mannschaft finished bottom of their group below Holland and France, and would have been relegated to League B had UEFA not restructured the competition.

Germany are also top seeds in the forthcoming draw for the World Cup 2022 qualifiers on December 7.

'There is a firm conviction that Joachim Low and his coaching team will deliver successful games and results despite a challenging situation for everyone,' the statement said.

Low's current contract with Germany runs until the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
