After his contract talks with Bayern Munich took an unexpected wrong turn, David Alaba has become one of the hottest properties in the transfer market.
The Austrian's current deal with the European and Bundesliga champions ends in June 2021, and Bayern have decided to withdraw their contract offer, which had been on the table for several months, to Alaba, meaning he could leave on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.
Barcelona had thought about adding depth to the left-back position for some time, even looking at some targets during the summer, though nothing materialised. One of those was Alaba who is highly thought of by the Blaugrana hierarchy, but his chances of a move to the Camp Nou right now are non-existent.
The main reason for this is because of his salary. Alaba currently earns eight million euros a season net, with the figures on offer in his contract renewal at Bayern closer to 12 million euros per season after tax.
Barcelona are unable to pay anything near that figure. Although the player would arrive on a free transfer, this no fee being paid. Barcelona's salary payments are already through the roof and the club looking to reduce their overall wage bill.
Currently in the midst of a salary reduction negotiation with the playing staff, the context of signing a footballer on such a high salary, for a position which already contains Jordi Alba, isn't viable.
Right now, the main aim is to strengthen the defence with Eric Garcia with the current Manchester City man the main target for the January transfer window.
