Barcelona have placed Ajax's Matthijs de Ligt on their radar, as a potential back-up in defence to Gerard Pique.
The club's technical directors have been following the player for a long time and have travelled to Amsterdam on numerous occasions to scout him.
The Blaugrana have been checking the market for potential reinforcement on the right side of central defence, as Samuel Umtiti, Thomas Vermaelen and Clement Lenglet are all left-footed.
Such a move would be vital for the team, as it will both provide Pique with some rest and create competition for the position.
De Ligt is under contract with Ajax and a potential agreement between the two teams could be reached next summer.
In this scenario, Vermaelen would leave as his contract ends in June and Barcelona haven't expressed any intention to renew it.

I wanted this guy to come in this summer instead of Lenglet, alot of people argued with me at that moment, but yes, he has talent & it would be very difficult for a coach to have him in the world bench, because quality cannot be over shadowed. But on the other hand, I would also suggest him to only join Barcelona if Valverde is sacked, Valverde is not a coach, who can manage young talents, he's a coward, & despite him seeing your ability, he would never have the guts to bench Pique. So stay where you are, & come in next summer, because I know, Valverde is not going to last long.
