Luis de la Fuente explained the reasons behind his choice to call up FC Barcelona forward Ferran Torres as one of the replacements to cover the absences in the Spanish team for the match against Cyprus. The coach recalled during the pre-match press conference for the Euro 2024 qualifier that the Valencian forward has a long history with Spain.

De la Fuente believes that at this moment, the Barcelona striker "needs more confidence to be the Ferran we need. We can't not use players of this calibre," he warned. Therefore, with the injuries to two important forwards like Marco Asensio and Dani Olmo, "we considered it the right time to call him up due to the absences."

Self esteem boost can’t be bought or imposed. He needs to earn that himself by playing better. Therapy and words of appraisal might help but it’s ultimately up to him to get it back and maintain it

Prior to the pre season, Ferran Torres had lost self confidence and no coach would trust such player on the field. Fati and Eric Garcia are all examples. He needs to start gaining self confidence.
