Luis de la Fuente, head coach of the Spanish national team, gave a press conference this morning in Oviedo, where Messi will receive the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
"I am very honored to be here for such an important global event. Today, Oviedo is the center of everything, not just for sports and football, but it's also a source of pride for all Spaniards," De la Fuente said.
The coach also praised the Argentine player's career and his legacy in world sports. "I believe that Messi's legacy in the history of sports and football is extraordinary. He has set many examples both personally and competitively. It's always significant to have someone of his caliber receive such an award."
Ballon d'Or predictions?
When asked about his preferred candidate for the Ballon d'Or, De la Fuente clearly expressed his stance on Spanish players winning the award. "No, no, no... I will always be very happy as long as a Spaniard wins the award," he replied.
Yamal is one of the strongest contenders for this award. De la Fuente also spoke about the possibility of this generation of Spanish players, who have just won the European Championship, receiving future awards.
"If they deem it appropriate and Spanish football can win important awards, it would be an honor. That would be very special, and we would be very happy," he concluded.
